JOHNSONBURG – Willis "Bill" Simon was involved in many civic organizations, including the Johnsonburg Chamber of Commerce, Johnsonburg Area Development Organization, president of the Johnsonburg Area Health Center Advisory Board, the Johnsonburg Welfare Chest, the Boy and Girl Scouts of America, and many more.
He especially loved Rotary International. He was a three-time Paul Harris Fellow and had 48 years of perfect attendance, and was the chairman of the annual Rotary Multi-phasic Blood Analysis Program for many years.
"Bill was a terrific rotarian," said rotarian Duane Duffy. "He was a perfect attendance guy for probably 53 years. He never missed a meeting and did makeups. I joined Rotary maybe eight years ago and Bill was responsible for getting me into Rotary and he feathered the way for me. I think Mr. Simon would be very appreciative of the bench in his honor. We appreciate the sunshine provided and I think you would know he probably had a hand in that to, if you knew Bill."
Simon worked for Penntech Papers in Johnsonburg for 46 years before retiring in 1991.
"Bill's activity in the Chamber goes back almost to the beginning," said executive director Ronald King. "He wanted to try and get everybody to be very active in the community and support the community of Johnsonburg, which is fitting now that we have a place to sit and talk while we are walking around thinking of things Bill has said and done over the years, and what he has done to support Johnsonburg."
