WILCOX – The annual Wilcox cemetery walk was held Sunday as a part of the Wilcox Public Library’s festival. The walk was led by Tom Wantuck, a member of the Jones Township Historical Interest Group. Wantuck led participants through the cemetery touching on some of Wilcox’s founding families. Wantuck mentioned as he relished in the beauty of the Wilcox cemetery how that cemetery is one of four in Jones Township.
The cemetery holds the families of those who founded Wilcox so many years ago. Wantuck explained how Maurice Morgan Schultz and his family is one of the most notable founders of Wilcox.
“After his older brother Jackson Schultz bought the Palen Tanning Company, Maurice took over the management of the new company,” Wantuck said. “Maurice spent years building the tannery into the largest sole tannery in the world. This made Wilcox all it was.”
Other notable businesses which shaped Wilcox were a blacksmith shop owned and operated by John Sonny; Joseph Tambini ,who was a stage coach driver until the railroad came through the area; Thora Lehman, who ran a funeral home her father had originally created; Martin Sowers, a shop owner and later a Jones Township School Director and Supervisor, and who also is credited for developing the Wilcox schools.
