Alice R. Vanatta

Alice R. Vanatta, 94, of Pinecrest Manor, St. Marys, formerly of 522 1st Ave., Johnsonburg, died Wednesday afternoon, April 2, 2014 at Pinecrest Manor, St. Marys, following a lengthy illness.
She was born Sept. 12, 1919 in Wilcox, daughter of the late Albert N. and Mary Lecker Smith.
She married H. Dean Vanatta on Aug. 8, 1941. He died June 15, 1973.
She resided in Johnsonburg most of her life and graduated from Johnsonburg High School, Class of 1937.
She was a member of Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg Senior Center and the former Rolfe Sportsmen's Club Women's Auxiliary.
She was employed by Penntech Papers for 10 1/2 years before retiring in 1986.
She is survived by four sons and three daughters, Dean Francis Vanatta and his wife Ellen of Johnsonburg; Michael L. Vanatta and his wife Linda of Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa.; David A. Vanatta and his wife Patty of Johnsonburg; James T. Vanatta and his wife Mary of Mt. Airy, Tenn.; Judith, Mrs. David Rettger of St. Marys; Nancy L., Mrs. Paul Galford of Emporium and Margaret A. Mertz of St. Marys; 23 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and James Smith; and three sisters, Margaret Hankinson, Theresa Smith and Florence Steudler.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Alice R. Vanatta will be held at Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg, on Saturday, April 5 at 10 a.m. with Rev. David J. Wilson, pastor, officiating.
Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Johnsonburg.
Friends will be received at the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home, 401 Chestnut St., Johnsonburg on Friday evening from 6-8 p.m.
