BROOKVILLE – By the time the 2012 PIAA District 9 AA Track and Field Championships were over on Friday evening at Brookville Area High School, several District 9 records had fallen as athletes strove to qualify for the PIAA state meet.
In addition to Elk County Catholic High School's Kennedy Weisner's record-setting performances in the girls' 800-meter run and 1600-meter run, six other records were broken in the girls' events on Friday.
Brookville junior Lanae Newsome was named the James Manners Award winner as the Most Outstanding Female Athlete after snapping a trio of records. Newsome bested her own records in both the girls' 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. In the 100-meter dash, her previous record of 12.55 was set just a year ago, but this year she was even faster, taking the District championship in the event in a time of 12.42. In the girls' 200-meter dash, Lewsome's previous record of 25.36 was set back in 2010. This year she won the title in a time of 25.26. Newsome also snapped a record that stood since 1996 in the girls' triple jump. Her jump of 39'9" was over a foot farther than the previous record of 38'.5" set by Coudersport's Kristin Zimmerman.
Aisha Newsome, also a junior at Brookville Area High School, set new District records in both of the girls' hurdles events. She took the win in the girls' 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.47, beating a record of 15.62 set by Ridgway's Erin Carter in 2002. In the 300-meter hurdles, she finished first in a time of 45.4, breaking a record that Brookville's Paula Connor set in 1985.
The final record to fall in the girls' events on Friday was in the javelin. Northern Potter senior Clarrissa Knauer won the District title with a throw of 145'04", beating the previous record of 142'07" set by Union's Tiffany Corle in 2007.
Five more District records fell in the boys' events.
Sheffield senior Kalil Slaughter received the James Manners Memorial Award as the Most Outstanding Male Athlete after setting a pair of new records. Slaughter won the District title in the boys' 100-meter dash in a time of 10.88. The previous record of 10.94 had been set by Clarion-Limestone's Dan Alderton in 2000. The oldest record to fall during Friday's meet was in the boys' 200-meter dash. The previous record of 21.84 had been set back in 1967 by Union's Bob Butler. Slaughter finished the event in a time of 21.70.
Clarion senior Bryce Straffin put his name in the record books by finishing the boys' 400-meter dash in a time of 48.15, almost a full second better than the previous record of 49.14, which was set by C-L's Dan Alderton in 2000.
Port Allegany junior Nick Conway won the boys' 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.9, betting the previous record of 15.04 that was set by Cameron County's Rod Lyon in 1977.
Brookville senior Ryan Kerr set a new record in the boys' javelin with a throw of 207'02", over 10 feet farther than the previous record of 193'06" set by Moniteau's Matt Schandelmeier in 2006.
