The Ridgway junior high basketball teams were honored with a banquet Monday night at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Seventh-grade coach Ed Thorwart introduced the players and spoke about getting the players to adapt to the Elker style of basketball.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ Johnsonburg girls basketball honored their 2014-2015 team with a banquet held Sunday afternoon at Johnsonburg Area Elementary School.
Varsity head coach Ellie Kocjancic introduced the four seniors and gave each one of them plaques referencing a game which stood out in her mind from the past season. Taylor Wolfe was the first senior mentioned and Kocjancic remembered the Ramettes win at Curwensville in which she scored 15 points and held Ciara Strickland to 14 points. Wolfe was also the Defensive MVP award winner.
CLARION â€”Â The Clarion-Limestone Lions advanced to the District 9 Class A boys championship game by defeating the Elk County Catholic Crusaders by a 49-40 score in overtime Wednesday night at Clarion University's Waldo Tippin Gymnasium.
The Lions outscored the Crusaders 11-2 in the extra four-minute period after Elk came back to knot the score at 38 at the end of regulation.
Kentucky played host to SEC league door matt Auburn and appropriately blew them out of the gym. Kentucky used a 23-2 run in the first half to break open a 27 point first half lead. They never looked back as Auburn never seriously threatened again. Karl Anthony Towns led Kentucky with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
CLARION â€“ It was a successful weekend for area wrestlers as a total of six area grapplers will be going to the PIAA Northwest Regional Championship at the conclusion of the District 9 Class AA Individual Wrestling Championships Saturday at Clarion University.
For Ridgway, Bryce Barclay (106), Drew Baumgratz (120), Logen McClain (126), Ryan Geyer (195) and Troy Quail (220) qualified. Johnsonburg's Jake Zimmerman qualified at 132 pounds.
BROOKVILLE â€“ There was no mincing words on who Ridgway boys basketball coach Anthony Allegretto thought was the better team Friday night.
Ridgway lost 52-45 to Venango Catholic in the District 9 boys basketball Class A quarterfinals held Friday night at Brookville High School.
The Ridgway varsity girls basketball team was honored with a banquet Thursday evening at Aiello Cafe in Ridgway.
Ridgway varsity head coach Stacy Kifer introduced the players and handed out awards.
Rachel Foringer was the scholar-athlete award winner.
â€śRachel really improved in many aspects this season,â€ť coach Kifer said. â€śShe was a key girl to help us out on defense this year. She is a hustler and gives all she has on the court.â€ť
