Johnsonburg baseball ready for new season

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg baseball is the defending state champion in Class A baseball as recognized by the PIAA, at least on paper.
That's the only comparison, Johnsonburg head coach Jeff Peterson wants to make about last year's team and this year's team, comprised of only four starters back.

Ridgway baseball to feature young team in 2014

Ridgway baseball will feature a majority of younger players as the team enters the 2014 season.
Ridgway lost its season opener to ECC 5-3.
The Elkers finished last season 10-8 and advanced past A-C Valley in the first round of the District 9 playoffs with a 3-0 victory. It was the first playoff win for Ridgway since the 2009 season. Ridgway then lost to ECC in the second round of the playoffs by a 6-3 score.

JOHNSONBURG – The numbers keep growing for Johnsonburg track and field and so does the success.
Johnsonburg heads into the 2014 season off a season which saw the teams improve.
Johnsonburg varsity head coach Rene Wenner said around 50 are out for the varsity squads with near 40 on the junior high teams. Wenner said she has been pleased with the consistently growing numbers.

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg boys tennis features a mix of new and returning players entering the 2014 season.
The Rams have just six players on the team as of the preseason. Nate Field, Tyler Martonik and Mason Walters are the returning players on the team while Brenden Dauber, Pranay Medapally and Zane Hodgdon are newcomers.

Johnsonburg track and field opens season with tri-meet

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg track and field hosted Oswayo Valley and Port Allegany in a tri-meet Wednesday afternoon at Johnsonburg Area High School.
The Johnsonburg girls swept the meets. Johnsonburg won 113-29 over Oswayo Valley and 113-35 over Port Allegany.

Rams even record with 10-3 win over Kane

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg rebounded from an opening loss to Smethport with a 10-3 win over Kane Wednesday afternoon at Knothole Area Recreational Park.
"A little more life [yesterday]," Johnsonburg coach Jeff Peterson said. "I think the younger kids, I think they were really nervous [Tuesday], not that they weren't [yesterday]. It's a work in progress. Cole threw real well. We had a couple errors, I don't think they had an earned run again."

Ramettes win home opener in Johnsonburg

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Ramettes overmatched a young Kane Lady Wolves squad Wednesday afternoon in a 12-2 five-inning game at Knothole in Johnsonburg.
The Ramettes, comprised of student athletes from both Ridgway and Johnsonburg in the first year of a cooperative sports agreement, tallied 12 runs on 10 hits in the game.

Crusaders rally to win opener 5-3 over Ridgway

Facing a three-run deficit early in Wednesday afternoon's game, the Elk County Catholic Crusaders rallied to defeat the Ridgway Elkers 5-3 in a contest that was the season opener for both teams.
It may have been overcast and a bit chilly, but both teams were happy to finally be on the field playing baseball.
"It's good to be outside," said ECC head coach Fr. Eric Vogt. "The third day of the year we're outside and we play a game. We got the win though."

Rams lose season opener to Smethport

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg baseball lost 7-3 to Smethport to open the 2014 season Tuesday afternoon at Knothole Area Recreational Park in Johnsonburg.
Miscues hurt the Rams in the season opener as Johnsonburg made four key errors which led to Smethport's runs. Three of those errors came in the outfield on relatively routine flyballs. Johnsonburg coach Jeff Peterson said he thought the outfield would be something that needs improved but expected better quality than what was displayed Tuesday.
