St. Marys girls tennis edges Johnsonburg

JOHNSONBURG – St. Marys girls tennis won 5-4 in girls tennis action Thursday afternoon at Johnsonburg Area High School.
At No. 1 singles, Taylor Scida of Johnsonburg defeated Mary Rosman, 6-4, 6-4.
“Taylor Scida won her first match. She has to get more confidence in herself,” Johnsonburg coach Gregg Dauber said. “She’s good. She has to realize she’s good.”
St. Marys’ Amy Orr secured a victory at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Riley Fannin.

Crusader golfers edge St. Marys Dutchmen in close match

ST. MARYS – In a case of cross-town rivalry at its best, the Elk County Catholic Crusader golf team edged the squad from St. Marys Area High School 224-225 in a close match played at the Bavarian Hills Golf Course on Thursday afternoon.
"It was as good of a match as we could have asked for," said St. Marys Area head coach Dan Vollmer. "Unfortunately for the Dutch, one of the players added incorrectly and had to take a higher score than they shot."
Eight players from each school participated in the match; however, only the top five scores from each team counted for their total.

Herzing wins Club Championship

Over the past two weekends, the Laurel Mill Golf Club held its annual Club Championships. The golfers were flighted according to their handicap. They then competed in a 54-hole stroke play tournament.

Rams finish second in tri-match

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Crusader golf squad picked up a pair of wins on Wednesday afternoon as they defeated the Johnsonburg Rams and the Kane Wolves in a tri-match held at the St. Marys Golf Club. Elk Catholic won the match with a score of 211. Johnsonburg had a score of 219, while Kane had a score of 260. The match featured eight golfers from Elk Catholic, five from Johnsonburg and six from Kane; however, only the top five scores from each team counted for the match.

Ridgway football flush with new faces and higher expectations

A spark to the upcoming season may have come at the end of last year's 10-game slate.
A 20-18 victory by the Elkers over Clarion-Limestone ended the 2010 football season with a win and varsity head coach Mark Heindl said he saw that momentum from the off-season to preparation for this season. He noted his appreciation for the 2010 seniors and the work they put into the program and teaching this year's team members.

New faces aplenty for Johnsonburg football

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg varsity football team looks to be at a disadvantage this season with reportedly only 21 players on the team and a new coaching staff but first-year head coach Jesse Schreiber is welcoming all the challenges.
"One challenge that we face is that we're a very inexperienced football team with losing 12 seniors to graduation," Schreiber said. "Two returning players are unable to play this year, one because of a transfer and the other due to medical issues, and both of those hurt badly.

Elkers take 29-stroke win over Brockway

Despite finding trouble off the first tee Tuesday afternoon at Laurel Mill Golf Course, Ridgway freshman Josh Roselli finished with a 41 to grab medalist honors in a 29-stroke victory over the visiting Brockway Rovers.
Roselli was joined by junior Josh Mitchell, who shot a 42. Ridgway sophomore Jake Klawuhn followed with a 45, junior Jesse Reynolds with 46, and junior Matt Aiello with 47 strokes for a team score of 221.
Ridgway sophomore Mtichell Gilmore also was out on the course and brought home a 48; he was joined by freshman T.J. Schlimm with 50 and sophomore Mason Stark with 53.

Senior leadership key for Lady Elkers volleyball in 2011 season

With three returning seniors on the roster, Ridgway head girls varsity volleyball coach Janet Redmond has placed leadership duties squarely on their shoulders as they head into the new season.
"The strongpoint of this team I think will be Nicole Breier," said Ridgway head girls varsity volleyball coach Janet Redmond, now in her fourth year at the helm of the program. "She's complemented by fellow seniors Erica Thorwart and Emily Ames, and [junior] Katie Oknefski, another player who has done a wonderful job, and she's going to be a middle hitter for us this year plus be a setter.

Consistency name of the game for Ridgway Lady Elkers golf

With two seniors and three underclassmen, Ridgway girls varsity golf coach Gary Gerber II will be looking for consistency and improvement on the links this year.
"For the underclassmen, they're younger golfers so you're looking for some improvement throughout the season," Gerber said. "Some of them worked on their game during the summer and some of them didn't.

Johnsonburg golf looks strong with limited depth

JOHNSONBURG – What the 2011 Johnsonburg golf team lacks in depth, it appears it will make up for it in talent this season with early-season success.
The Rams have just six players on their roster but the Rams went out and shot a blistering total of 199 in its first match against Brockway. Johnsonburg coach Matt Myers said the team lost two players to injury during the off-season and two players who decided to play football.
