Crusaders open D9 League with 45-38 win over Beavers

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Crusaders opened play in the District 9 League with a 45-38 victory over the DuBois Area Beavers at the ECCHS gym. This was also the home opener for the Crusaders.
The Crusaders were able to take a 19-9 lead at the half, then outscore the Beavers 18-10 in the third period to take a 37-19 lead in the final eight minutes of play. DuBois outscored Elk 19-8 in the fourth quarter, cutting Elk’s margin of victory to 45-38.
“It was a good win tonight,” said ECCHS coach Aaron Straub. “Obviously DuBois missed a lot of shots early.”

Late rally dooms Johnsonburg against Cameron County

JOHNSONBURG – The Ramettes (2-3) held a 6-point lead late in the third quarter Monday against Cameron County (4-1) but inconsistent rebounding and foul lead to their demise, 46-42, against the visiting Lady Red Raiders.
Johnsonburg had built a 6-point lead with 2:45 on the clock as junior Brittany Watts, who paced all scorers with 15 points, scored a layup for the Ramettes' largest lead of the night.

Ridgway falls to Smethport, 52-10

Ridgway girls basketball lost 52-10 to Smethport in action Monday night at Ridgway Area High School.
The Lady Elkers were off to a slow start as Smethport scored the first 16 points of the game in the first quarter, the run capped by a Shannon Hughes 3-pointer with just more than two minutes left in the first half.
Ridgway broke the offensive drought with one minute left in the first quarter as Katie Oknefski hit a 2-point jump shot. Smethport led 18-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Elkers takes second at Jamestown Tournament

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – Ridgway wrestling took second at the annual Jamestown Holiday Classic on Friday and Saturday.
Ridgway finished with a total of 163 team points and finished as the top team among Pennsylvania participants. Spencerport (N.Y.) was the overall winner with 216 points, the 14th time that school has won the event.

Elkers rout Curwensville in AML South encounter, 60-21

After one quarter, Ridgway had the game in hand.
Curwensville was still searching for a basket.
Ridgway opened with a 29-0 lead after the first quarter and was not challenged in a 60-21 win over the Golden Tide Friday night in an AML South game at Ridgway Area High School.
"It's like going out and pitching a perfect game for one quarter," Allegretto said. "They did some good things defensively. I really challenged them. I wasn't real happy with our defense in the Smethport game with our starting five. They went out and tried to fix some things, I was real happy with it."

Rams use overpowering offensive attack to down Sheffield, 72-47

JOHNSONBURG – The undefeated Rams (3-0) used a strong first half Friday to fiend off a scrappy Sheffield team in a 72-47 victory.
Johnsonburg was fueled by a quintet of stars who combined for 56 points on the night. Johnsonburg junior Quinn Luhr paced all scorers with 18 points; he was followed by sophomores Cole Peterson and Cameron Grumley, who finished with 14 and 13 points, respectively, and junior Kyle Sheldon, who contributed 11 points to the cause.

Lady Elkers fall to Lady Gators

Ridgway girls basketball lost 54-9 to Port Allegany Thursday night at Ridgway Area High School.
The Lady Gators led throughout in the victory. Port Allegany led 11-0 in the first 4:30 of the game before Kiki Woodford had a 2-point field goal to break the Ridgway drought. Jenni Thomas had a 2-pointer with 1:15 left in the first quarter as Port Allegany took a 20-4 lead into the second quarter.
Thomas contributed with another jumper just over a minute into the second quarter and Taylor Roseto made a free throw. The Lady Gators led 32-6 at the half.

Pirates manager Hurdle assesses off-season moves

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle saw the needs of the team after his first season in 2011.
This off-season he and ownership are addressing them.
Hurdle spoke about the Pirates off-season as he and starting pitcher James McDonald, relief pitcher Daniel McCutchen and broadcaster John Wehner stopped at WDDH 97.5 The Hound with Dennis D. Heindl and Rose Heindl as a part of the Pirates Caravan on Wednesday.

McCutchen recounts 19-inning game

One game of the 2011 season sticks out to Pittsburgh Pirates fans.
The Pirates lost 4-3 to the Atlanta Braves in a game which started on July 26 and didn’t end until the early morning hours of July 27 when a missed call at home plate allowed the winning run to score for the Braves.
MLB later acknowledged the call was missed by home plate umpire Jerry Meals.
Daniel McCutchen ended up being the losing pitcher that night but only after he pitched 5 1-3 innings and allowed just that one run at the end of the game. He said the atmosphere itself was a fun one.

Lady Crusaders defeat Johnsonburg 52-39 in AML contest

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team raised their record to 2-0 on the young season as they won their home opener last night over the Johnsonburg Ramettes by a 52-39 score.
After Elk Catholic took a 17-8 first-period lead, the Ramettes battled back in the second quarter to take a slim 24-23 lead at the half.
The second half found Elk Catholic outscoring Johnsonburg 29-15 to win the game.
