Himes takes fourth at regionals

SHARON – Brett Himes of Ridgway finished fourth at 126 pounds at the Northwest Regional Wrestling Championships which finished up Saturday at Sharon High School.
"I'm not ashamed of anything he accomplished," Ridgway coach David Fordoski said. "He accomplished more than anybody could have ever dreamed. Even if you lose, he was in it and that's a memory that he'll never forget. Being so close to being able to make it to states, kids would give anything to be in his shoes. He did the best he could when he had his chance. I'm really proud of him."

Himes advances to regional semifinal

SHARON – Ridgway wrestling advanced one wrestler to the Northwest Regional semifinals after action Friday at Sharon High School.
Brett Himes for Ridgway advanced with a 3-1 decision over Mason McCollum of Reynolds in the quarterfinal round.

Trio of area wrestlers advance to Regionals

CLARION – Three area wrestlers advanced to the Northwest Regional Championships after the second day of the District 9 Individual Championships at Clarion University Saturday.
Alex Zimmerman finished second at 132 pounds for Johnsonburg to advance. Brett Himes (126) and Zac McKnight (145) each finished third in their respective weight classes.

Ramettes advance to PIAA playoffs

The Johnsonburg Ramettes gave up an early lead, but then used a strong second half to defeat the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders 39-32 in a District 9 Class A quarterfinal playoff game on Thursday evening at Elk County Catholic High School. The win guaranteed the Ramettes a spot in the PIAA Class A state playoffs and eliminated the Lady Crusaders.

Elkers nearly hit century mark in win over Green Wave

The only question left by the time the fourth quarter rolled around Tuesday night was not who was going to win but whether Ridgway would hit 100 points.
The Elkers came close.
Ridgway scored over 20 points three of the four quarter en route to a 96-45 win over Oswayo Valley Friday night in the first round of the District 9 Class A boys basketball playoffs.
All 13 players scored at least two points for the Elkers with Jesse Reynolds leading the way with 21 points. Robbie Byrd tallied 17 points and Sam Roselli finished with 16 points. Tony Leithner had 11 points for the Elkers.

Johnsonburg starts playoffs with 63-21 win over Union

JOHNSONBURG – Let the fun begin.
The Johnsonburg Rams (23-2) opened the District 9 Class A playoffs Tuesday night with a 63-21 victory over the Union Knights of Rimersburg.
The Rams took advantage of another fast start Tuesday and jumped out to an early 25-5 lead after the first quarter of play.

Crusaders advance to AML boys championship game

In the first meeting between Elk County Catholic and Ridgway, the Crusaders didn't make a single 3-pointer.
That was far from the case Friday night.
The Crusaders made eight 3-pointers and advanced to the AML championship game with a 61-46 victory over Ridgway at Ridgway Area High School.
"I think just as important as it is for your offense, it's just that important for defense," Elk County Catholic coach Aaron Straub said. "When you make shots, you get a little more bounce in your step defensively, you get a little bit quicker, you get a little bit more energized."

Rams pummel Rovers, vie for AML crown tonight

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Rams (21-2) had no trouble Friday as they cruised to a 66-22 win over Brockway (14-7). With the win, the Rams will play tonight at 7:30 p.m. at St. Marys Area High School against Elk County Catholic (18-5) for the Allegheny Mountain League [AML] crown.
The Rams were led by juniors Cole Peterson and Cameron Grumley, scoring 21 and 19 points, respectively, which was more than enough to topple Brockway.

Elkers fall to Wolves in dual

Kane wrestling won 41-27 over Ridgway in a dual meet held Thursday night at Ridgway Area High School.
The Wolves made their seven match wins count, earning maximum points in six of them with four forfeits and two pinfalls. The Wolves also earned a technical fall.
Ridgway won a trio of close decisions with two pinfalls and a forfeit.

Late matches doom Rams on Senior Night

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Rams held a slim 22-21 lead going into the final matches Thursday night against visiting Clarion but could not shut the door in a 32-26 loss.
Devin Mann squared off against Clarion's Caleb Bailey at 113 pounds and overwhelmed the opposition, scoring five takedowns in an 11-2 major decision to earn a bonus point.
"[Mann] had five takedowns throughout the match and that was the best I've seen him wrestle all season," said Johnsonburg head varsity wrestling coach Mike Votano. "He's been working hard and the results are coming out."
