Johnsonburg advances in Little League tournament

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg minor league baseball all-stars advanced in the District 10 Little League Tournament with a 43-4, 4-inning victory over Reyn-Sykes Monday night at Knothole Recreational Park.
Johnsonburg was able score runs at a fast clip, with 10 runs in the first, 16 in the second, 10 in the third and seven in the fourth.

Area basketball player set to play in Las Vegas

Ridgway boys basketball center Sam Roselli had some highlights in the Elkers' run to the state semifinal this past basketball season including a strong fourth quarter in the state quarterfinal against VisionQuest which led to a victory.
From what he might learn this summer with basketball, he may have more to come.
Roselli will be part of the Rising Stars of Clarion team which will be participating in the adidas Super 64 in Las Vegas from July 25-29, one of the premier high school summer tournaments in the country.

Johnsonburg major league softball all-stars host Bradford

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg major league softball all-stars lost 14-9 to Bradford in consolation bracket action Tuesday night at Knothole Recreational Park.
Bradford was strong early, scoring 13 of the 14 runs in the first three innings.

Wilcox legion squeezes by St. Marys

WILCOX – Wilcox American Legion baseball squeezed its way to a 2-0 victory over St. Marys Monday night at Jones Township Community Park.
Wilcox scored both of its runs on suicide squeeze plays in the sixth inning to break what had been a scoreless tie to that point.
"We had it on a few times earlier, we didn't come through with it," Wilcox coach Jeff Peterson said.

Ridgway Major League softball opens play

The Ridgway major league (11-and-12 year old division) softball team opened all-star play Sunday afternoon with a 6-5 loss to Brookville at the Ridgway Little League fields along Grant Road.
Ridgway held a 5-4 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning before Brookville would score a pair of runs as the designated home team to take the victory. Alissa Watterson started the inning with a walk. After a strikeout, Brookville starting pitcher Karlie McManigle would hit a short single to first. Watterson moved to third on a bad throw, putting two runners on for Brookville.

Wilcox Legion downs Bradford, 7-0

WILCOX – The Wilcox American Legion baseball team remained undefeated on the season with a 7-0 victory over Bradford Monday night at Jones Township Community Park.
Wilcox (3-0) took the lead in the second inning and never looked back as Bradford could only record two total hits off of three Wilcox pitchers.
"Pitching, everybody did real well," Wilcox coach Jeff Peterson said. "It was a nice mix of the three."

Crusaders crushed by Bishop McCort 17-0 in Western Final

PUNXSUTAWNEY – "The only disappointment tonight was that we didn't show our best," said ECC baseball coach Tom Zampogna following the Crusaders' 17-0, six-inning loss to the Bishop McCort Crushers on Monday afternoon in Punxsutawney. "Whether we lost or won isn't so much the disappointment-- it's the fact that I know we've got a better team than what we brought to the field tonight."
Zampogna's remarks summed up the Crusaders' efforts in the PIAA Class A Western Final match-up.

Fannett Metal eliminates Lady Crusaders from ‘A’ tourney

LORETTO – The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team saw their season come to an end Friday afternoon at St. Francis University in Loretto, where they suffered a tough 2-1 loss to the Fannett Metal Lady Tigers.
Elk Catholic ended the season with a fine 20-4 record. They were the District 9 Class A champs and won the Elk County Tournament.

Crusaders edge Lancers 4-3 to advance to semifinals

INDIANA – The Neshannock Lancers may have had more fans in the stands and around the field at Thursday afternoon's quarterfinal contest at the White Township Recreation Complex in Indiana, but the Elk County Catholic Crusader squad made enough noise both on and off the field to keep the momentum in their favor as they pulled off a 4-3 victory to advance to the PIAA Class A baseball championship semifinals.
Jack Herzing went the distance on the mound for the Crusaders, giving up three hits, walking two, and striking out seven.

Streich drafted in sixth round by Athletics

A lifelong dream became reality for Seth Streich on Tuesday.
Streich, a junior at Ohio University, was selected in the sixth round with the 199th overall pick by the Oakland Athletics on the second day of the MLB Draft.
