Ridgway wrestling falls to Port Allegany in home opener

Ridgway wrestling lost 60-3 to Port Allegany in the Elkers' home opener Tuesday night at Ridgway Area High School.
"Port Allegany's a great team," Ridgway coach David Fordoski said. "They have a lot of upperclassmen and they wrestled like that. They have a lot of mat experience. A lot of our kids are just starting to get their experience. They were able in a lot of the matches to get that extra takedown or the extra thing right at the end in the win. It's disheartening sitting on this side, seeing it happen but it's part of the learning process."

Young Rovers, forfeits doom Johnsonburg wrestling, 58-16

JOHNSONBURG – A slew of Brockway underclassmen came up big Tuesday night as the visiting Rovers earned a 58-16 win over the Rams on the wrestling mat in Johnsonburg.
The Rovers got six wins by underclassmen, three by freshmen and another three by sophomores, and took advantage of four wins by forfeit for the runaway victory.

Elkers win over Cameron County

After a defensive struggle in the first half, Ridgway was able to wear down Cameron County's defense in the second half and pull away for a 52-20 win over the Red Raiders Monday night at Ridgway Area High School.
Ridgway led 15-8 after a low-scoring first half of play.
"Coach (Cameron County coach Jon) Songer had a great game plan there," Ridgway coach Anthony Allegretto said. "They got those big kids standing in the zone, controlling the boards and they made us hit shots."

Ramettes have no trouble with Sheffield, cruise to 3-1

JOHNSONBURG – The Ramettes overcame early foul trouble and cold shooting to improve to 3-1 on the season with a 55-38 victory Friday night against visiting Sheffield.
The Ramettes were paced by senior point guard Rhianon Fowler, whose 14 points led the team; Fowler was complemented by junior Chelsea Benson, who also crept into double digits with 11 points.

Lady Elkers fall to Lady Tide

Ridgway girls basketball lost 70-28 to Curwensville Friday night at Ridgway Area High School.
Ridgway took an early lead as Jenni Thomas scored on a baseline jumper for a 2-0 Lady Elker lead. Dani Shirey also converted a jumper with 7:13 left in the first quarter to double the Ridgway lead to 4-0 lead.

Ramettes hold on for 47-44 win over ECC

JOHNSONBURG – The monkey is finally off Mike Zilkofski's back.
Now in his eighth season as head coach of the Johnsonburg girls varsity basketball team, Zilkofski was on the winning side against Elk County Catholic for the first time in his career after Wednesday night's 47-44 victory in Johnsonburg.

Rams spoil ECC season opener

The Johnsonburg Rams spoiled the season opener for the Elk County Catholic Crusader basketball team with a 47-37 victory Tuesday night at the ECCHS gym.
The Rams were able to take advantage of two runs in the first quarter which moved them out to a 14-6 lead after the first eight minutes of play.
After the Crusaders had taken the early 4-0 lead, the Rams came back on a 8-0 run to make the score 8-4. They outscored Elk 6-2 the rest of the quarter making the score 14-6.
"Johnsonburg has a good team and they are well-coached," said ECCHS coach Aaron Straub.

Lady Elkers fall to Lady Cardinals

Ridgway girls basketball lost 48-2 to DuBois Central Catholic Tuesday night at Ridgway Area High School.
The Lady Elkers struggled offensively and got their only two points of the game in the fourth quarter with 4:27 remaining as Sierra Kos drained two free throws.

Rams wrestling defeats Cameron County

JOHNSONBURG – Needing bonus points all throughout the night along with a little help after forfeiting three upper weights, the Johnsonburg Rams managed to start their dual meet season off on the right foot in a 37-36 win over Cameron County.
The match was decided on a tiebreaker which went all the way down to "Criteria H," which grants the victory to the team that has the "greater number of first points in each match." Cumulatively, the Rams scored four first-point takedowns for eight points while the Red Raiders notched three first-point takedowns for six points.

Ramettes edged by Lady Owls

JOHNSONBURG – Bradford girls basketball was able to outscore Johnsonburg 12-3 in the fourth quarter to take a 62-53 win Monday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
Johnsonburg was able to play even with the defending District 9 Class AAA champions who were 24-1 last season and undefeated in the regular season. The two teams were tied at 50 after three quarters.
