ECCHS holds fall sports awards program

Elk County Catholic High School held its 2014 Athletic Awards Program sponsored by the ECCSS Athletic Association on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. in the school's auditorium.
ECCHS Athletic Director Aaron Straub served as the master of ceremonies for the program, and started off by providing attendees with some background on the number of students that were members of one of the school's fall sports teams.

Guyer signs National Letter of Intent with St. Bonaventure

Ridgway senior cross country runner Rachel Guyer signed a National Letter of Intent with St. Bonaventure University Wednesday afternoon at Ridgway Area High School during the first day of the early signing period.

Crusaders' season ends with 39-0 rout by Kane

When the Kane Wolves dominated the Elk County Catholic Crusaders 39-0 in a District 9 Class A quarterfinal match on Saturday night at Dutch Country Stadium, Kane head coach Todd Silfies explained that the strong showing by his squad was about more than just avenging a close 13-12 senior night loss earlier in the season and staying alive in the playoffs.
"It's actually deeper than that," Silfies said. "That (ECC) is a very good football team with a great class of seniors, and they've haunted these guys."

11th annual UAVSL senior games held

BROCKWAY – The 11th annual UAVSL Senior Girls and Senior Boys soccer games were held at Frank Varischetti Field in Brockway on Saturday.
The games give area senior soccer players a final chance to play alongside some of their teammates as well as to play both with and against some of the familiar foes they faced throughout their high school careers. Several players from both St. Marys Area High School and Elk County Catholic High School competed in both games.

Ridgway football falls in first round to Union, 18-14

Union’s second win over Ridgway this season equaled the first playoff win in Golden Knights football history.
A late defensive stand by the Golden Knights helped Union preserve an 18-14 win over Ridgway in the quarterfinals of the District 9 Class A football playoffs Friday night at Memorial Field in Ridgway.
“It’s a relief,” Union coach Dave Louder said. “We may have had better teams but we’ve never had this family-style team. These guys are behind each other 100 percent. It’s just great to get that monkey off our back and we got to prepare for Brockway.”

Ridgway boys golf honored with banquet to celebrate successful season

The Ridgway boys golf team was honored with a banquet Thursday night at Laurel Mill Golf Club.
Head coach Eric Herzing expressed appreciation to the parents and the booster club along with assistant coaches Denny McMahon, Dave Zawatski and Jerry Stenta.

Ridgway varsity head coach Janet Redmond handed out awards and named Bridgette Woodford as the team’s MVP.

The Ridgway junior varsity volleyball team was honored with a banquet Tuesday night at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
JV head coach Robin Barclay expressed appreciation to her family and spoke about the life lessons to be taught with sports.
"We started out the season with five sophomores, five freshman and two juniors," Barclay said. "I believe sports can teach some real life lessons. As coaches, Janet and I try to highlight those as they come up."

Lady Crusaders fall to Maplewood in PIAA opening round

COCHRANTON – The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders saw their season come to an end with a 3-0 loss to the Maplewood Lady Tigers in the opening round of the PIAA Class A volleyball playoffs. A number of parents and fans also made the trek to Cochranton High School to cheer on the Lady Crusaders.

Ridgway soccer programs honors teams with banquet

The Ridgway soccer programs were honored with a banquet Monday night at the Ridgway Area High School cafeteria.
The boys soccer, girls soccer and junior high soccer programs were all honored. Each team had a scholar-athlete award recipient. The boys soccer scholar-athlete was Bryce Dias and the girls soccer scholar-athlete award winner was Rachel Smith. The junior high soccer scholar-athlete award winner was Anna Cristini.
