Johnsonburg boys basketball program honored with banquet

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg basketball program honored its teams with a banquet Sunday afternoon at Johnsonburg Area High School.
Varsity head coach Bill Shuey introduced all of the players and presented the awards. Senior Brian Feronti won the Bill Fulton Memorial Scholarship Award and the Coach’s Award.

Ridgway wrestling honored its varsity team with a banquet Saturday night at Aiello’s Cafe.
Varsity head coach David Fordoski spoke about a phrase which came out of the season-opening win at Brockway this season, “We’re back.”
“Last year I talked about improvement,” Fordoski said. “This year’s phrase I got from our very first dual meet of the year. Nobody was talking about Ridgway wrestling. Friends said Brockway was going to beat them. We beat them. That was a sign of the season. That’s our phrase this year.”

The Midwest Regional final was held at Quickens Loan Arena this year. The undefeated
Kentucky Wildcats came in as heavy favorites to move on to the Final Four in
Indianapolis. That didn’t stop Daxter Miles of West Virginia to proclaim that
Kentucky will be 36-1 after the two teams meet Thursday night. That certainly did
not happen. The Wildcats completely overwhelmed the Mountaineers and doubled them up

Big Dance Roundup and Look Ahead
 
Last week we gave you a preview of the tournament and some predictions of teams that we felt could make a run to the Final 4. Well, those predictions were way off and the bracket this writer submitted to his friends and a couple websites sits in about 10 millionth place. All the wise guys were talking about Iowa State and Virginia. Those teams won a combined 1 game. Now we are going to go region by region to see what happened and what we can look forward to seeing next weekend.

Crusaders end season with 79-49 loss to Farrell

CLARION – The Elk County Catholic Crusaders saw their season come to an end with a 79-49 loss to Farrell on Tuesday night at Clarion University in the PIAA Class A second round.
The Steelers led all the way. They held a 15-7 advantage at the end of the first quarter and were up 34-25 at halftime. A strong third quarter gave them a 62-33 lead, and they went on to win 79-49.

Crusaders rally for 56-50 OT win over Bishop Carroll

EBENSBURG – ECC may have been down, but they were never out in Friday night's PIAA Class A opening round game against the Bishop Carroll Huskies at Central Cambria High School. Trailing for most of the game, and by as many as 14 points at one time, the Crusaders came alive in the fourth quarter, rallying to tie the game and force overtime en route to recording a 56-50 victory.

Geyer finishes 2-2 at states

Ridgway senior wrestler Ryan Geyer finished his run at the PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships with a loss in the second round of consolations Friday morning at Giant Center in Hershey.
Geyer lost a 14-2 major decision to Toby Cahill of Berlin-Brothersvalley to finish his run in Hershey with a 2-2 record.
Geyer finished the season with a 26-9 overall record and was Ridgway's first state qualifier under third-year head coach David Fordoski.
Geyer finished third at districts and fourth at regionals to make it to states.
