Johnsonburg varsity wrestlers honored with banquet

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg varsity wrestling was honored with a banquet Wednesday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
Varsity head coach Mike Votano expressed appreciation to assistant coaches Eric Iorfido, Bart Nelson, Beau Iorfido and Dylan Nelson.
Votano recognized the wrestlers. Alex Zimmerman won the Aaron Muroski Memorial Award and the Most Outstanding Wrestler award, the latter award won for the third time by the Johnsonburg seniors. Votano estimated Zimmerman’s 4-year record at 85-17.

Johnsonburg Rams junior high wrestling reflects on season with banquet

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg junior high wrestling program was honored with a banquet Wednesday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
Johnsonburg junior high wrestling head coach Tim Raubenstrauch spoke about the optimism in the program. He expressed appreciation to assistant coach John Norlin and Dan Carnovale along with the varsity coaching staff for all of their help.

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg varsity girls basketball team was honored with a banquet recently at Johnsonburg Area High School.
Varsity head coach Crystal Galsick said the team learned and improved as the season went on.

Johnsonburg junior varsity Ramettes honored

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg junior varsity girls basketball team was honored with a banquet recently at Johnsonburg Area High School.
Junior varsity head coach Ellie Kocjancic spoke about the teamwork displayed by the players this season.
“We had a small team but they all played very well together,” Kocjancic said. “Nobody ever gave up. We had a lot of injuries. Everybody stepped up when they needed to. I think we had a great season.”

Elkers fall in second round to North Catholic

CLARION – Turnovers and missed opportunities would hurt Ridgway boys basketball as the Elkers lost 58-43 to North Catholic in the second round of the boys PIAA Class A playoffs Tuesday night at Tippin Gym on the campus of Clarion University.
Ridgway trailed 28-22 at halftime after an 11-2 deficit to open the game. Ridgway took their first and only lead of the game at 31-30 after Ben MacDonald finished up a 3-point play near the five-minute mark of the third quarter. Ridgway outscored North Catholic 9-2 in the opening three minutes after halftime.

DeLong takes 1st, Blankenship 3rd at state tourney

HERSHEY – The Kane Wolves wrestling team only sent two wrestlers to the PIAA Class AA Championship Tournament last week, but those two wrestlers put on a clinic on how to perform under pressure by going 9-1 at the Giant Center in Hershey.
Evan DeLong won the state title one year after finishing as runner-up. DeLong rolled through the 170-pound weight class. On Thursday, the Wolves’ senior opened up his tournament with a technical fall over Chartiers-Houston’s Derek Hull. DeLong ended the match in 3:32 with a takedown and two back points to get him the 17-2 win.

Elkers advance with 62-32 win over Eisenhower

CLARION – When the dust settled Friday night, the Ridgway Elkers (21-6) were the lone District 9 Class A team still alive in the state playoffs.
"I know ECC and Johnsonburg were ahead of us, especially at the beginning of the season, but this team really grew and we have some leadership that really grew throughout the season, and it carried us through," Ridgway head coach Anthony Allegretto said following the win. "We want to keep this going."

Lincoln Park ends Johnsonburg season in first round

PITTSBURGH – An emphatic statement was made in the second quarter by Lincoln Park Friday night.
There would be no celebration at the Leopards’ expense this year.
Lincoln Park outscored Johnsonburg 35-13 in the second quarter en route to a 96-46 win over the Rams Friday night at North Hills High School in the first round of the PIAA Class A boys basketball playoffs.

Benninger signs letter of intent to run for Duquesne University

Current Johnsonburg track and field athlete Gabbi Benninger has signed a letter of intent to compete at Duquesne University.
Benninger is a senior at Ridgway Area High School and competes for Johnsonburg under the co-op agreement between the two schools.

Elkers win D-9 title

CLARION — The Ridgway Elkers captured the District 9 Class A boys basketball championship Saturday night by defeating the Elk County Catholic Crusaders by a 48-41 score in the title game played at Clarion University’s Tippin Gymnasium.
The Elkers had built a seven-point lead at the end of three quarters. In the final eight minutes of play, Ridgway used the foul line to their advantage as they converted 10 of 15 foul shots to help secure the victory. The Elkers were 17 of 26 from the sin strip for the game while Elk Catholic was nine of 13.
