Elk County Minor League All-Stars fall to DuBois 9-5 in D-10 opener

JOHNSONBURG – The Elk County Minor League (9- and 10-year-olds) All-Stars lost 9-5 to DuBois Tuesday evening at Knothole Area Recreational Park in the opening round of the District 10 Little League Tournament.

The Elk County Major League All-Star Team (11- and 12-year-olds) won their first game of the all-star tournament 18-5 when they traveled to Brockway Monday night.

St. Marys and Wilcox Legion teams split in doubleheader

ST. MARYS – The St. Marys American Legion Post 103 team hosted Wilcox for a doubleheader on Monday at Berwind Park, with the teams splitting the victories. St. Marys won the first game in a 12-0 shutout while Wilcox claimed an 11-6 victory in the second game.

Smethport Legion defeats Ridgway, 13-1

The Ridgway American Legion baseball team lost 13-1 in five innings to Smethport in action Monday evening at Sandy Beach Recreational Park.
Smethport scored six runs in the first inning and five runs in the fifth inning to help propel them to the victory.

MacDonald walk-off single leads Wilcox to win

WILCOX – Locked in a tight game Sunday night, the Wilcox American Legion baseball team loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth inning but came up empty while facing a one-run deficit against Fox Township.
Ben MacDonald wouldn't let his team make the same mistake twice.
With the bases loaded with two outs in the home half of the seventh, MacDonald smacked a Caleb Bennett offering into left center field to score pinch runner Jacob Zimmerman and Cole Peterson for the 4-3 walk-off come-from-behind win over Fox Township.

Brockway Legion defeats Ridgway, 8-3

Brockway used a strong five-run first inning to propel themselves to an 8-3 victory over Ridgway Sunday evening at Sandy Beach Recreational Park.

Wilcox Legion downs Ridgway, 8-0

WILCOX – It was a night for young stars to shine at Jones Township Community Park.
Led by a complete-game shutout by Neil MacDonald, Wilcox defeated Ridgway 8-0 in American Legion baseball action Friday night.
MacDonald allowed four hits, all singles, walked three and struck out five for Wilcox.

Crusaders come up short in state title bid

STATE COLLEGE – One step made all the difference in the Elk County Catholic Crusaders winning the PIAA Class A Baseball Championship 2-1 in regulation and losing it 2-1 to Devon Prep in extra innings.
Senior Vincent Jacob led off the first inning with a double, went to third on a wild pitch, and came home as Ivan Wortman flied out for the second out of the inning. Jacob's run appeared to give the Crusaders an early lead, but Devon Prep checked to see if he had left early, and the umpires ruled that he had, negating the run and resulting in the third out for Elk Catholic.

Wilcox Legion falls to Smethport

WILCOX – The Wilcox American Legion team hopes there isn't another night like Wednesday this season.
Smethport blew open an early lead with an eight-run fifth inning as Smethport won 14-0 over Wilcox in five innings at Jones Township Community Park in American Legion baseball action.

Crusaders advance to state title game

PUNXSUTAWNEY – With two outs in the top of the seventh of the PIAA Class A Western Final at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field in Punxsutawney, the Bishop McCort Crushers had a runner on third and their own pitcher, Brad Coleman, at the plate. All Coleman, who had spent the game in a pitchers' duel with Schlimm, needed was to reach base safely and the game would be tied. ECC had held a 1-0 advantage since the fourth inning, but the Crushers had left men stranded in all but the sixth.
