Budget has adverse affects on human services

As budget discussions continue to dominate Harrisburg this week, funding within the state spending plan seem to have adverse effects on area human services groups.

Two charged in felony firearms offenses

ST. MARYS – Two men have been charged in separate incidents with sale or transfer of firearms, unsworn falsification to authorities and disorderly conduct for attempting to purchase firearms at Elk County Ammo and Arms in St. Marys.

Judicial system coping with increasing crime

With the number of criminal cases filed in Elk County on pace for a record high, changes within the county judicial system are imminent.
Commissioners and county salary board members on Tuesday voted to eliminate two county intermediate punishment program [IPP] positions and create two additional adult probation officer positions.

Work continues on courthouse clock tower

Restoration work and exterior repairs are still underway on the courthouse clock tower in downtown Ridgway.
Commissioners recently approved a change order for $18,000 to replace damaged artificial slate.

Charles A. Vogt

Charles A. Vogt, 62, of Fombell, died Monday, June 30, 2014 while in the comfort of his home.
He was born Nov. 21, 1951 in St. Marys, son of the late Charles and Donna (O’Brien) Vogt.
Charles was employed in the logging business and later operated heavy equipment for 30 years. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and pitching horseshoes. Despite his illness, Charles was still able to fully harvest and process his own deer last December. Above all, he loved and cherished his family and friends dearly.

Patricia Jeanne Clifford

Patricia Jeanne Clifford “Jeanne”, 85, of 78 Station St., Daguscahonda, died Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
She was born Jan. 19, 1929, in Utica, daughter of the late Otto Fredericks and Genevieve Cratty Stitzinger.

Bradford Legion defeats Ridgway, 10-1

The Bradford American Legion baseball team won 10-1 over Ridgway in action Monday evening at Sandy Beach Recreational Park.
After two scoreless innings, Bradford opened the scoring with a run in the third. Hunter Dixon reached on a one-out bloop single and went to second on a poor pickoff throw by Ridgway. Mike Wilber reached on an infield single to put runners at the corners and John Obermeyer followed up with a sacrifice fly to score Dixon and give Bradford a 1-0 lead.

St. Marys senior softball stars beat Elk County 12-2 in five innings

The St. Marys Little League Softball Senior All-Stars advanced to the finals of the District 10 Senior Tournament with a 12-2, five-inning victory over the Elk County squad Monday night at Benzinger Park.
St. Marys used the one-hit pitching of Sydney Hoffman to record the win. Hoffman went the distance for St. Marys giving up one hit, walking two and striking out nine.

Seismic testing underway in Ridgway

Seneca Resources, who notified Ridgway residents of their intentions to conduct seismic testing in late spring, has recently brought a team to Ridgway in order to conduct the tests.
Seismic Equipment Solutions in conjunction with Blueline Geo out of Fort Worth, Texas, have set up shop off of Front Street in Ridgway and are reportedly testing areas in the Boot Jack and state Route 120 areas.

Matthew J. "Matt" Sprague

June 29, 2014

Matthew J. "Matt" Sprague, 30, of 235 West Center St., Johnsonburg, died Saturday, June 28, 2014 at his residence following a lengthy illness.
He was born Dec. 29, 1983, son of Lawrence "Larry" Sprague and Peggy Dickinson Sprague.
He graduated from Johnsonburg Area High High School in 2003 and resided in Johnsonburg all his life. He was a member of Holy Rosary Church, Central Hose Company, and was an avid Cinch player. He was a Walmart associate for 10 years.
