Youngsters gather for Chorus Fest

ST. MARYS – On Thursday evening, 150 students from 12 schools throughout the region performed at St. Marys Area High School as part of the Elementary IU9 Chorus Fest.

The chorus included fifth and sixth grade students from throughout Intermediate Unit 9 (IU9).

Christopher Gankosky, SMAHS band director, acted as the guest conductor for the event. He was joined by Johnsonburg Elementary School music teacher Laura Kleppinger as the guest accompanist on piano.


Women's Social Spring Bash set for April 22

The Elk County Women's Social Spring Bash presented by the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce is set for Wednesday, April 22 in the wine cellar of Gunner's in downtown St. Marys.

"It's a great girls' night out. It's an excuse to get out and do something fun," said Ashley O'Dell, Chamber outreach coordinator.

This year the Winery at Wilcox is offering wine samplings. In addition each attendee will receive a small gift with an Earth Day theme as well as chances to win assorted door prizes.

Supervisors receive feedback on zoning ordinance

Representatives from Hunt Marcellus Operating Company, LLC and Seneca Resources once again attended a Ridgway Township supervisors meeting to offer feedback on the township's zoning ordinance that aims to add the oil and gas industry to the township's zoning ordinance.

Pennsy Station in Ridgway vandalized

Ridgway residents received a rude awakening Wednesday morning as passersby saw crude graffiti scrawled on the wall of the Pennsy Station along North Broad Street.
The word "slut" was spray-painted in capital white letters toward the base of the building. It has since been washed off.
The insult, however, remains.
"That's like slapping me in the face," said Denny Heindl, local businessman and philanthropist who spearheaded the campaign to preserve the landmark even when railroad officials who own the property sought to level the structure back in 2011.

RASD board hears presentation on fitness center

Robbie Waller, a territory sales manager for Advantage Sport and Fitness, Inc., attended Tuesday's Ridgway Area School District school board meeting to discuss a proposal to replace the district's equipment in its fitness center.
Waller brought with him a proposal for a five-year replacement plan which would replace much of the equipment in the district's fitness center, some of which has been in the center since it was built in 1989.

Plans move ahead for chapel repair funding

After reaching out to county officials Tuesday morning regarding the well-documented foundation issues with Decker's Chapel in St. Marys, progress appears to have been made after a followup afternoon meeting at the site.

Elk County Commissioner Dan Freeburg met with Charlie Steger, a contractor who runs a local masonry company with extensive expertise in historical masonry.


County officials award Act 13 grants

Elk County Commissioners on Tuesday morning passed out another round of Act 13 grants to local municipalities, county offices, and area groups.

The commissioners last year established a grant program to redistribute a portion of their allocation of the Act 13 Marcellus Shale Impact Fee for local projects.


Progress is seen in addressing state land issues

The battle against the lack of fair taxes on state-owned forest and game lands continues to gain traction as the Pennsylvania State Land Tax Fairness Coalition pushes the issues to the forefront.

Elk County government officials last month pledged their support and unveiled a detailed map illustrating the amount of tax-exempt land within the county.

Reports indicate just 23 percent of the land in Elk County is generating local taxes at market value.

On Tuesday, officials reiterated their support pledge and discussed recent headway regarding the issues.
