Tia Meredith enjoys taking the reins

KERSEY – To the untrained observer at a horse show, it may not seem like it takes much to maneuver horse and rider gracefully around the ring-- but competitive rider Tia Meredith of Kersey knows differently.
"Preparing for a show is a lot of work. Not only you, but the horse, has to practice and know what to do," Meredith said.
Meredith, who has been riding for 35 years and showing competitively for 27 years, became interested in competition while attending Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Back-and-forth Fox Township versus Wilcox game suspended at 11-11

WILCOX – Fox Township and Wilcox could have played deep into the night Saturday but instead settled for an 11-11 tie after the game was halted due to darkness after seven innings of play.
The game featured six lead changes before Wilcox knotted the game at 11-11 in the bottom of the seventh inning. On top of the back-and-forth contest, the clouds parted for rain throughout the game and drenched the field prior to the start.

Bank holds grand reopening ceremony

The Ridgway branch of PNC Bank received a strong turnout for its grand reopening event held Friday afternoon at 301 Main St.
The Family Festival provided a variety entertainment for adults and children including a live radio remote by WDDH-FM, 97.5.
Children took their chances to win a $150, $100 and $50 gift cards on the PNC prize wheel and Plinko. A U.S. Savings Bond was awarded to the winning child in the coloring contest.

Ridgway Rotary holds 1st annual Quilting Bee

The Ridgway Rotary is introducing its first annual Quilting Bee fundraiser and local wilderness-themed quilt to be completed by residents.
Local residents are invited to join in on the fun and help construct a block of the quilt, which will be drawn for at the Rotary's annual Quilt Show on Oct. 15 at the Udarbe Complex.
"One of our fundraising projects for this year is to begin the annual Quilting Bee," said Rotarian Linda Assalone Holtz. "All of the profits from raffling the quilt will go right back to the town.
"The concept is to design a quilt and let the residents help make it."

New book features CCC in national forest

KANE – A new book on the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) has been published by the Kane Historic Preservation Society.
The 124-page book is filled with photos and accounts of the 16 CCC camps in the only national forest in Pennsylvania.

Elsie L. Rogers, age 82, of 420 Lookout Ave., Ridgway, died Friday morning at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness. She was born Aug. 28, 1928 in Franklin, daughter of the late Carl M. and Elizabeth (Bennett) Henderson. She married Vernon E. Rogers on Jan. 10, 1952, he survives. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, was a past volunteer at Elk County General Hospital Thrift Shop, loved to play cards, go camping with her family, fish and play the slot machines.
She was a graduate of the Franklin High School.

District 9 all-star teams released

The District 9 baseball and softball leagues crowned the following schools as divisional champs for the 2011 season, as well as selected the following players as all-stars.
There are three divisions: Baseball and Softball Large School, Baseball and Softball Small School North, Baseball and Softball Small School South.

Corridor safety analysis completed

Officials in the transportation department at North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission [NCPRPDC] announced the completion of a corridor safety analysis Wednesday with some surprising findings.

Basement fire at Hotel Johnsonburg

There was a small basement fire Thursday night at approximately 7 p.m. at Hotel Johnsonburg. Multiple fire units responded to the small fire in the unoccupied building. There were no initial reports regarding the fire, but there were no injuries.
