Elkers finish out action at state tournament

HERSHEY – Ridgway wrestling may not have come away with any dual victories Friday.
The Elkers still leave with the satisfaction of being among the last 10 teams left in the state tournament this year.
Ridgway finished 0-2 in the second day of the PIAA Team Wrestling Championship, falling in the consolation round 41-18 to Pen Argyl.
Ridgway opened up action in the state quarterfinal with a 39-27 loss to Towanda Friday afternoon.

Samuel T. "Tom" Mills Sr

Samuel T. "Tom" Mills Sr., 87, of Snyder Memorial Personal Care Home, Marienville, formerly of 190 East Ave., Johnsonburg, died on Feb. 10, 2011 at the Snyder Memorial Personal Care Home, following a lengthy illness.
He was born June 29, 1923, in Johnsonburg, son of the late John A. and Helena M. Ames Mills.
He married Mary Kathleen Bowley on Nov. 15, 1945 in St. Anne's Church, Wilcox, who preceded him in death on July 25, 2007.

Elkers advance to state quarterfinals

HERSHEY – It wasn’t about how Ridgway wrestling started Thursday, it was how the Elkers finished.
After a slow start, Ridgway closed with nine straight wins in a 54-21 dual victory over Lower Moreland in the second round of the PIAA Team Wrestling Championship.
Ridgway now faces Towanda in the state quarterfinals at noon Friday. Towanda won over Ridgway 40-23 at the Towanda Duals on Jan. 8.
Of the nine wins to close out the dual, five of them were pin. Ridgway had six pins overall along with two technical falls and two major decisions.

Zimmerman one away from 100 career wins

JOHNSONBURG – With a pinfall victory just 47 seconds into his match, Johnsonburg senior Max Zimmerman strutted off the mat Thursday night with 99 career wins to his credit. While the Rams lost 58-11 to visiting Kane, Johnsonburg head wrestling coach Tom Launer had nothing but praise for his senior standout.

Margaret M. Moran

Margaret M. Moran, age 72, of 207 Madison Ave., Ridgway, died peacefully Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 8, 2011, at Elk Haven Nursing Home after a long illness of Rheumatoid Arthritis. She was born Aug. 24, 1938, in Punxsutawney, daughter of the late James B. and Gertrude O. (O'Conner) Quinlisk. She married John T. Moran on July 4, 1959, he survives. She had resided in Ridgway since 1967 and was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church, the IU9 Advisory Committee, the PTA, and the Eagles Club Auxiliary. She had been a homemaker.

Jason C. Pontious

Jason C. Pontious, 41, of 162 Cuneo Rd., Kersey, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011 in Ft. Myers, Fla., where he had resided the past three months.
He was born July 23, 1969, in St. Marys, son of Irvin Pontious of Pearce, Ariz. and Karen Fritz Pontious of Kersey. He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys Area High School and machinist school in Ridgway. He was a former employee of Quala-Die, Inc.

Judith L. Buehler

Judith L. Buehler, 72, of 3627 Montmorenci Rd., Ridgway, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Monday, Feb. 7, 2011 following a lengthy illness.
She was born on April 13, 1938, in Ridgway, daughter of the late LeRoy and Verna (Anderson) Johnson.
She married James F. Buehler on June 18, 1955. He preceded her in death on June 30, 2008.

Ridgway wins fifth consecutive district title, 600th match

DuBOIS – Hollywood couldn't have written a script with as much symmetry as what Ridgway wrestling experienced Saturday.
A fifth consecutive district championship, toppling the top-seeded team in the district. The program's 600th win. And an Elker freshman clinching it all with a pinfall.
Cody Stahl's pin at 103 pounds sealed a 32-29 win over top-seeded Brookville in the championship of the District Team Duals Saturday at DuBois High School.

Eileen E. LaFarr DiNardo

Eileen E. LaFarr DiNardo, 84, of 5538 Ridgway-Johnsonburg Rd., Johnsonburg, died Saturday evening, Feb. 5, 2011 at Pinecrest Manor in St. Marys following a lengthy illness.
She was born May 17, 1926 in Wilcox, daughter of the late Clarence and Olga Nord Johnson Sr.
She married Samuel S. LaFarr on Feb. 20, 1947 and he preceded her in death on March 22, 1989. She later married Dominic Anthony "Tony" DiNardo on July 28, 1989 and he survives.

James B. Sheasley

James B. Sheasley, age 79, of 1438 Montmorenci Rd., Ridgway, died peacefully Friday morning, Feb 4, 2011, at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born Feb. 21, 1931 in Plumcreek Township, son of the late Walter E. and Sarah J. (Miller) Sheasley. He was married to Josephine (Pangallo) Sheasley for 58 years, she survives. He had resided in Ridgway for many years and was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Ridgway Fire Department-Montmorenci Area Fire Co. #44, the Food Bank, and the Hit and Miss Engine Club. He had served in the U.S.
