The Ridgway Area School District approved a memorandum of understanding [MOU] for the Ridgway Virtual Academy during their regular school board meeting last night.
Superintendent Dr. Michael O'Brien took the time to explain the importance of blended schools in the district.
The NRA National Silhouette Championships completed action in the smallbore standard rifle event with a familiar face garnering the national championship.
Cathy Winstead-Severin (Joplin, Mo.) won the smallbore standard rifle national championship with a 3-day score of 113 (39-38-36). She also won the smallbore events in Ridgway last year.
Enrique Kuess Jr. (Laredo, Texas) was second overall in the aggregate with a total of 109 and Angelica Kuess Davila (Laredo, Texas) was third at 105.
The NRA National Silhouette Championships concluded the smallbore section of the week in hunting rifle Tuesday at the Ridgway Rifle Club.
Cathy Winstead-Severin (Joplin, Mo.) won the national championship in smallbore hunting rifle with a 3-day score of 108 (37-36-35). Enrique Kuess Jr. (Laredo, Texas) was second overall with a 106 and Kenneth M. Haupricht (Johnsonburg) finished third overall with a score of 102.
With the new Spring Creek Bridge now 10 years in the making, supervisors in Spring Creek Township are growing impatient as rising costs and state budget issues plague potential construction.
"That bridge is going to fall where it's going to fall unfortunately," said chairman Richard Wittman during a board meeting Monday night. Fellow supervisor Paul 'Ted' Bullers also was less than sympathetic and suggested that officials "put six-inch pipe across it and put 'condemned' on it."
JOHNSONBURG â€“ The Department of Environmental Protection [DEP] approved a water sales agreement for the Johnsonburg Municipal Authority to sell water to the Hunt Marcellus Operating Company.
Municipal authority member Ed Gapinski attended Monday's Johnsonburg Borough Council meeting to update the council on the approval.
"We finally had the blessed event," Gapinski said. "They [DEP] gave us approval to sell our water at 157,000 gallons of water per day to Hunt."
WETMORE TWP. â€“ The Kane-based state police is investigating a crash that occurred on Aug. 6 at 2:20 p.m. along U.S. Hwy. 6, approximately .40 miles west of Detrick Road in Wetmore Township.
Winifred E. Bowler, 92, of State College, formerly of Pittsburgh and Ridgway, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011 at the Hearthside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in State College.
Born on July 1, 1919 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Winifred (Walker) Mole.
On March 17, 1945 in Brisbane, she was married to Robert E. Bowler, who preceded her in death on Dec. 12, 1996.
Mrs. Bowler was employed as a Unit Secretary at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh where she retired in 1982.
The smallbore standard rifle team championships were held Monday at the Ridgway Rifle Club as part of the NRA National Silhouette Championships.
The overall team champions were â€śB.A.S.S.â€ť That team finished with a total score of 207. Team members are Susan Peery (Churchton, Mass.), Cathy Winstead-Severin (Joplin, Mo.) and Laura Goetsch (Whites Creek, Tenn.) Winstead-Severin had a 77 to lead the team.
The NRA smallbore hunting rifle championship took place Monday afternoon at the Ridgway Rifle Club smallbore range as part of the NRA National Silhouette Championships.
The overall team winner was â€śMexico 1â€ť with a score of 202. Team members are Gabriel Guerra (Monterrey, Mexico), Angelica Kuess Davila (Laredo, Texas), and Enrique Kuess Jr. (Laredo, Texas).
The overall runner-up was team â€śB.A.S.S.â€ť with a score of 201. Team members are Susan Peery (Churchton, Mass.), Laura Goetsch (Whites Creek, Tenn.) and Cathy Winstead-Severin (Joplin, Mo.)
