Harry Clarence Launer, 83, of Jackson Run Road, and formerly of Johnsonburg, passed on Saturday evening, July 16, 2011, at the Warren Manor.

Regina A. Korep, 89, of Cushing Avenue in Johnsonburg and recently of Elk Haven Nursing Home, died Saturday, July 16, 2011 at Elk Haven Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.
She was born March 12, 1922 in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late Hipolit and Rosie (Brzostik) Korep.
She lived all her life in the same house on Cushing Avenue in Johnsonburg and was a graduate of Johnsonburg High School. She worked at Stackpole Carbon. She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, the Red Hat Society and the local polka club. She enjoyed dancing and traveling.

Warm weather deters blood donors

The Central Fire Station along North Broad Street in downtown Ridgway hosted a blood drive for the N.Y.-Penn region American Red Cross stationed out out of Buffalo, N.Y.
According to Red Cross supervisor Pat Schwarzmueller, the warm weather may have deterred donors.
"We were six percent lower than this time last year," Schwarzmueller said. "It has really pushed us this year and because it has been so warm it declines even more, since people are either staying home in air conditioning or are on vacation. So we see less and less."

Kittens highlight problem of animal abandonment

Animal abandonment, particularly of cats, is a recurring problem in the area, with many being left near farms or in other remote areas.
Mary Meyer, 14, of St. Marys, recently came face-to-face with this problem while walking with her mother, Donna, and dog, Malu, near her home in the Benzinger Road area on the evening of June 19.

Theresa A. Gerber, 83, of 315 Mill Street, Daguscahonda, died Friday, June 15, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
She was born May 18, 1928, in Daguscahonda, daughter of the late Frank and Ellen Ribeck Supon. On September 4, 1948, in the St. Benedict's Church in Daguscahonda, she married Robert J. Gerber, who preceded her in death on July 28, 1986.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Ridgway High School. She was a former employee of Quality Components and the Sears store in St. Marys.

School district increases lunch prices

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Area School District approved an increase in the price of lunch by five cents after a mandate from the federal government during their regular school board meeting Thursday night.

Municipal authority adopts drought plan

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Municipal Authority recently adopted a drought contingency plan requested by Department of Environmental Protection [DEP] officials.
Authority members voted unanimously in favor of adopting the drought plan as drawn up by Uni-Tec Consulting Engineers Inc. for the water agreement with the Hunt Marcellus Operating Company.
Chairman Eric Poague discussed the criteria for the various trigger points to be used by Authority officials in identifying the various onset of drought response levels in the system.

Jacob named Democratic district justice candidate

ST. MARYS – St. Marys resident and attorney Mark Jacob has been named as the Democratic nominee on the ballot for Magisterial District Justice 59-3-03 in the Nov. 8 general election.
Jacob was nominated by the Elk County Democratic Party's executive committee this week following the withdrawal of Democratic primary ballot winner Stephen P. Skrzypek of Kersey. Skrzypek took the top spot on the May 17 ballot. He withdrew his candidacy on July 5.

Third annual "Kids Triathlon" nears

With impressive turnouts for the first two years, YMCA officials and various volunteers from the community are looking forward to the third annual "Kids Triathlon" scheduled for Saturday, July 30 at 11 a.m.
"This is a great event for our local youths," said Mary Lynne Bellotti, executive director of the Ridgway YMCA. "We are once again pleased to be able to put it together. 
"There are several different age groups for both boys and girls and each event is designed to fit that age group."

Summer months brighten YMCA

According to Ridgway YMCA executive director Mary Lynne Bellotti, the popular North Broad Street facility has flourished as of late, especially during the summer months.
"There is a whole lot going on at the Ridgway YMCA this summer," Bellotti said. "We have been on the go nonstop."
Among the bright spots provided by the facility and its employees is the Ridgway YMCA Summer Camp program, an initiative offered from the time local schools go out of session right up until the first day of classes in the fall.
