Charles J. Marconi

April 12, 2011

Charles J. Marconi, 79, of 120 Hemlock Rd., St. Marys, died Monday morning, April 11, 2011, at his home after a brief illness.
He was born Feb. 24, 1932, in St. Marys, son of the late Zolferino and Mary Nart Marconi.
On Nov. 5, 1955, in the St. Mary's Church, he married Norma Salter, who survives.

Elk County Catholic loses season opener to Brockway

The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team opened their season on Monday by hosting the Brockway Rovers at Berwind Park. The Rovers were able to take advantage of seven Elk Catholic errors on their way to a 7-4 victory over the Crusaders.
“After two weeks inside, you have to be ready to play and we weren’t,” said ECCHS coach Father Eric Vogt. “They took advantage of our mistakes, and that’s what good teams do. Their pitcher kept us off-balance. Thank goodness it’s a long season."

Brody named to Big 30 team

The 38th annual “Big 30 Don Raabe Charities Classic” will be played Saturday, August 6, 2011 at Parkway Field in Bradford, PA.  The first thirty-seven games have produced nearly 1.4 million dollars which have been given to numerous charities and personal causes throughout the twin-tiers.
Teams consist of graduated seniors from 30 high schools in Pennsylvania and New York.

James E. Clark Sr.

James E. Clark Sr., 66, of 1585 Montmorenci Rd., Ridgway, died early Sunday morning, April 10, 2011, at DuBois Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness.
He was born Sept. 15, 1944 in Ridgway, son of the late Robert A. and Margaret I. (McDonald) Clark.
He married Gale M. Moore on July 13, 1968, and she survives.
He resided in Ridgway all of his life and was a member of the Ridgway Moose Club, the V.F.W., and a former member and past president of the International Camping Club. He had attended Ridgway area schools.

Raymond LaVerne Allen

Raymond LaVerne Allen, 83, of 42 School Street, East Kane, died Friday, April 8, 2011, at his residence.
Born Jan. 14, 1928, in Medix Run, he was a son of Walter Bliss and Bertha Edna Peters Allen. On Dec. 28, 1990, in Kane, he married Christy A. Milford, who survives.
Before his retirement, Mr. Allen had worked at several places, including Wilcox Railroad, Wilcox Tannery, Holgates and then Kane Manufacturing from which he retired.
He attended Wilcox Schools and also helped in the building of the Assembly of God Church in East Kane.

Ridgway baseball competes in Altoona Curve Classic to open season

ALTOONA – Ridgway baseball opened its season over the weekend at the Altoona Curve Classic, finishing with an 0-2 record.
The Elkers lost in the opener, 8-2, to Bishop Guilfoyle and followed with an 11-1 loss to Bishop Carroll.

Ridgway baseball delayed at Curve Classic

Ridgway baseball was scheduled to play in the Altoona Curve Classic but that has been postponed until the weekend.
Ridgway opens against Bishop Guilfoyle at 9 a.m. Saturday morning. Bishop Carroll faces Hollidaysburg at 11:15 a.m. and Tyrone takes on Central at 1:30 p.m.
Bishop Walsh plays Altoona at 3:45 p.m. The losers of the first two games play at 6 p.m. while the losers of the second two games play at 8:15 p.m.

Bush fares well in early spring action for Seton Hill

Ridgway Area High School graduate Brianna Bush competed recently in a pair of events.
Bush was third overall at the conclusion of the the Johnny D. Barbour Invitational. For the two-day event, she compiled a score of 178 (94-84). Her 84 shot on the second day was the best of all competitors in the top 20. Seton Hill was third as a team with a score of 757 (388-369).
Bush opened the season at the OVU Invitational at Marietta Country Club in Marietta, Ohio. She finished 14 overall with a two-day score of 180 (92-88) and had the best score for Seton Hill.

Deacon Sylvester F. "Cy" Simchick

Deacon Sylvester F. "Cy" Simchick, 77, passed on to the Lord peacefully on April 6, 2011 in the arms of his loving wife of 57 years, Roselyn C. (Servidea) Simchick, in his Kenhorst residence. Born in Johnsonburg, he was the eldest son of the late Frank and Eleanor (Przybylski) Simchick. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph; his sister, Lucy Myers; his son-in-law, Brian Grabus; daughter-in-law, Roberta (Lehmann) Simchick; and niece, Suzie Simchick.

DuBois Area track teams sweep ECC squads

DuBOIS – The Elk County Catholic track and field teams were swept by the DuBois Area teams in a meet held at the DuBois Area High School complex.
The Lady Crusaders lost by a 105-45 score, while the Crusaders lost to the Beavers by a 97-53 score.
“Today’s meet was a test of our spirit and determination and overall we came through things well,” said ECCHS coach John Schneider.

Ridgway boys golf won the team season opener 195-246 over Kane Tuesday afternoon on a hot afternoon...
