Smallbore hunting rifle competition continues

The NRA National Silhouette Championships continued Monday with the second day of three days of shootings in smallbore standard rifle at the Ridgway Rifle Club smallbore range.
Cathy Winstead-Severin (Joplin, Mo.) and Angelica Kuess Davila (Laredo, Texas) each had scores of 38 and Gabriel Guerra (Monterrey, Mexico) was third with a 37.

Pennsylvania routs New York 28-3 in Big 30 game

BRADFORD – Rain showers throughout the day on Saturday did little to deter a large crowd from gathering at Parkway Field in Bradford for this year’s Big 30 Don Raabe Charities Classic All Star Football Game. Under the direction of the Kane Area High School coaching staff of head coach Jason Barner and assistant coaches Rick Fisher, Todd Silfies and Jim Sirianni, the Pennsylvania squad romped to a 28-3 victory over New York.

NRA Silhouette Championships open at Rifle Club

The NRA National Silhouette shooting championships began with first-day competition Sunday at the Ridgway Rifle Club smallbore range.
Cathy Winstead-Severin (Joplin, Mo.) was the first-day match winner in the smallbore standard rifle competition with a score of 39. Enrique Kuess Jr. (Laredo, Texas) was second overall with a 39 and William Zander (Houston, Texas) was third with a 38.

In honor of 'The Shepherd'

PUNXSUTAWNEY – PSP Trooper Kenton Iwaniec's friends referred to him as “The Shepherd,” or “Shep.” When he and his friends would go out, he was the designated driver.
“They called him 'Shepherd,'” his father, Ken Iwaniec, said Friday. “When they'd go out, he would get them home. We'd say, 'Are you going out?' His friends said, 'Yeah; Shep's got us.'”

The NRA National Silhouette shooting championships opened Sunday with a familiar name on top of the standings.
Cathy Winstead-Severin (Joplin, Mo.) was the match winner in smallbore hunting rifle with a 37 out of a perfect score of 40. She also was the match winner in standard rifle. Mallory Nichols (Fort Smith, Ark.) was second overall with a 36 and Enrique Kuess Jr. (Laredo, Texas) was third with a 36.

CWF holds show in Ridgway

The Championship Wrestling Federation held the Ridgway Rumble at the Ridgway Fire Hall Saturday night in a benefit fundraiser for the Bodien Family.
The 7-match card was highlighted with a main event which saw "The Solution" Scott Fowler capture his first CWF Heavyweight Championship with a victory over Brock Singleton. Fowler estimates he drove four or five hours to come up and wrestle, and felt the drive was worth it.

Eugene “Gene” Cooney

Eugene “Gene” Cooney of Atlanta, Ga., formerly of Johnsonburg, died July 27, 2011.
He was born in Johnsonburg Jan. 3, 1948 and was the son of the late George F. and Irene C. Cooney.

Changes minimal despite old name

FirstEnergy completed its merger with Allegheny Power back in late February, and while the old West Penn Power name has made its return, reportedly little else will change.
Tom Kearney, area manager for West Penn Power/FirstEnergy, said the office location along state Route 120 [Ridgway-St. Marys Road] will remain there and he hopes employees can continue providing reputable service to the community.

Municipal Authority initiates flushing plan

Works superintendent Carl Gosnell announced during a meeting Thursday night that the Ridgway Township Municipal Authority has initiated their recently adopted flushing plan.
Authority members adopted the plan during the July meeting.
"We have initiated our flushing plan that has been approved by DEP [Department of Environmental Protection] and we will be implementing the flushing plan until further notice," Gosnell said.
The plan was initiated as a preventative measure to remove excess chlorine and other byproducts from the water system.
