Second trial begins in Weidow case

The second trial for Brandon Michael Weidow, 26, of Byrnedale, began Wednesday morning.
Weidow is facing felony charges of homicide by vehicle and homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence for his alleged involvement in a 2012 vehicle crash that killed Savannah Straub.

Ridgway boys basketball downs Port Allegany to open 3-0

Foul trouble kept Jeremy Breier from having much success or seeing much playing time in the first half.
The second half was a different story.
Breier scored 18 of his game-high 24 points for Ridgway boys basketball in the second half as Ridgway moved to 3-0 with a 55-26 win over Port Allegany Wednesday night at Ridgway Area High School.

ECC Lady Crusaders earn solid 55-22 win over Johnsonburg Ramettes

JOHNSONBURG – Elk County Catholic had solid scoring all around Wednesday night in a 55-22 rout over the Johnsonburg Ramettes.
The Lady Crusaders were led by Reilly Herzing and Nicole Schneider as they came off the bench to score 11 and eight points, respectively. Four Lady Crusaders scored at least seven points in the win.

Hailey Hoffman wins all-around for Ridgway

Ridgway’s gymnastics season opened with an all-around individual victory.
Hailey Hoffman picked up the all-around win and three out of four event wins during Ridgway’s meet against St. Marys Wednesday night at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.

RASD: 'We have a contract'

Following a unanimous vote by the Ridgway Area School District School Board during a special board meeting on Wednesday, a contract with the Ridgway Area Teachers Association has been approved.
A motion to approve a contract with RATA was made by school board member Dave Parsons, seconded by fellow board member Kathy Lampman and following a roll call vote, all nine board members voted to approve the motion.
"Motion carries, we have a contract," school board president Lisa Connelly confirmed after the votes had been made.

Commissioners set salaries for county officers

The Elk County Commissioners approved a resolution fixing the salaries of certain county officers for the fiscal years 2016-2019.
On Tuesday evening the commissioners unanimously voted to increase wages by 2 percent for county county commissioners, prothonotary, register of wills/recorder of deeds, treasurer, sheriff, and coroner.
The raises are considered a cost of living increase.
The salaries are determined during similar meetings which take place every four years.

Ceremony honors world's lost children

Area residents are scheduled to come together Sunday evening for Elk County's second annual candle lighting ceremony held in conjunction with The Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candle Lighting Ceremony, an event held to honor children who have died at a young age.
The event is held across the globe at the same local hour on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. The local event will once again be held at the gazebo on the Elk County Courthouse lawn in downtown Ridgway.

Building repairs could cost $100,000

JOHNSONBURG – The community building in Johnsonburg was a major point of discussion during Monday's borough council meeting as repairs to fix the damaged track at the community building could cost anywhere from $10,000 to $100,000, according to Johnsonburg Borough councilman Ron King.
King updated the council on the situation at the community building during Monday's borough council meeting, saying that while a woman was walking on the track, the floor cracked.
Currently, the track has been closed because of the crack in the floor, and it will remain closed until repairs can be made.

Contract negotiations seemingly nearing end

After 1,065 days, contract negotiations between the Ridgway Area Teachers Association and the Ridgway Area School District may end if the school board votes to ratify a contract proposal during Wednesday's meeting.
According to RATA president Jason Phipps, the current contract that the school board will be voting on was proposed by the RASD negotiating committee.

Yolanda E. “Viola” Geci

Yolanda E. “Viola” Geci, 95, of 1173 Million Dollar Hwy., Kersey, died unexpectedly Monday, Dec. 8, 2014 on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, at Penn Highlands Elk.
She was born Feb. 8, 1919 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Anthony and Lucia Pasta Salvatore.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Sacred Heart School and St. Marys Public schools.
On June 15, 1940 in the Sacred Heart Church, she married Lucian M. Geci, who preceded her in death July 18, 1982.
