Monitoring equipment arrives

Elk County Conservation District watershed specialist Kim Bonfardine debuted new monitoring equipment that will be used for the Elk County Monitoring Project during Monday night's regular meeting.
"I'm pretty excited as we are trying to get things going quickly because of all the equipment that is coming in," Bonfardine said.
One of the items presented was a data logger that will go directly into the waterway to measure the conductivity, flow and temperature.
Each data logger will be encased in a housing unit, built by interns, to protect it from weather and debris.

Longtime girlfriend gives insight on VanGiesen

KANE – On Oct. 3, 1997, Ken VanGiesen, a junior, took Erin Sirianni, a sophomore, to the Homecoming Dance at Kane Area High School.
They've been a couple ever since.
"I was 15 and he was 16," Erin said in recalling the dance on a date that has become their anniversary. "We started dating and have been together since then. We just fit together."

Bogert House receives facelift

Members of the Ridgway Heritage Council are in the early stages of restoring the facade of the the historic Bogert House at 105 Main St. in downtown Ridgway.
"We thought in the short term it would be a good idea to start with the front of the building because that is what you see first," said Robert Imhof of the Heritage Council.
With the restoration of the facade, Heritage Council members hope to spark more interest from potential buyers and investors.
Once purchased, Imhof hopes to see the building restored to its intended use as a hotel or hotel/apartment building.

Shirley A. Fabino

Shirley A. Fabino, 79, of 155 1/2 Parade St., St. Marys, died Sunday, July 24, 2011, at the home of her daughter Shelley Dush of Washington Street, St. Marys, after a brief illness.
She was born Oct. 7, 1931, in Kane, daughter of the late Hilding and Ruth Sawyers Anderson. On Sept. 24, 1948, in Ridgway, she married Archie J. Fabino, who preceded her in death on Jan. 14,1978.

Mary Lee Bloom

Mary Lee Bloom, 55, of 4 Gillouly Ave., Ridgway, died unexpectely Saturday, July 23, 2011, at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born April 28, 1956, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Robert H. and Loretta Hallinen Nussbaum. In 1975, in Johnsonburg she married Hubert J. Bloom Jr., who survives.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys High School, Class of 1974. She was employed as an LPN at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys and Ridgway.

Eugene R. "Gene" Brechtel

Eugene R. "Gene" Brechtel, 84, of 159 Terra Cotta Rd., Johnsonburg, died Saturday afternoon, July 23, 2011, at Pincrest Manor in St. Marys following a lengthy illness.
He was born Oct. 4, 1926, in Warren, son of the late Eugene F. and Madeline Weidert Brechtel. On April 7, 1948, he married Catherine J. Rezmerski, who died June 17, 1997.

The Pennsylvania Major League All-Star Tournament will have some Ridgway representation this upcoming week.
Matt Wright, a 1985 Ridgway Area High School graduate is coaching the Redland Major League All-Stars to the state tournament.

Fundraiser to help Bodien family

For many folks, it seems to be the simplest of tasks: "I can get into the grocery store and remember things without even writing it down," says Jim Bodien of Ridgway, "even if it is just two or three things."
Jim suffers from Huntington's disease, a genetic defect on chromosome No. 3 that has caused loss of memory, judgment, speech changes, personality changes, and has brought on confusion in his life. To simply remember those two or three grocery items is in itself a noteworthy achievement.

Key National Guard generals salute fallen soldier

KANE – Two key generals in the Pennsylvania National Guard visited Friday afternoon in Kane with the family of 30-year-old Staff Sgt. Kenneth VanGiesen, who was killed Monday in Afghanistan.
The generals who flew to Kane in a Black Hawk helicopter from the Guard headquarters at Indiantown Gap near Harrisburg include:
*Major General Wesley Craig, who as adjutant general is the leader of the entire Pennsylvania National Guard.

KANE – There's a somber mood today at the Kane Armory along Chestnut Street where the local National Guard unit is undergoing its monthly drill.
The unit-- Detachment 1, Company A, 128th Brigade Support Battalion (BSB), Second Brigade of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard-- is mourning the loss of Staff Sgt. Kenneth VanGiesen, who was killed Monday while serving with another Guard unit in Afghanistan.
