Joseph F. Spowal, 83, of Ridgway-Johnsonburg Road, Johnsonburg, died early Tuesday morning, May 22, 2012 following a brief illness at the Good Samaritan Hospice at Concordia Lutheran Ministries in Cabot.
He was born May 19, 1929 in Pittsburgh, son of the late Giacomo "Jack" and Theresa Stoudt Spowal.
On Nov. 21, 1970 in Johnsonburg, he married Cecilia Marrone, she survives.
He had resided in Johnsonburg since 1974, formerly of Gibsonia and Smethport.
Sandra "Sandy" Calkins Kowalski, 72, of 2605 Rosalyn Trail, Long Beach, Ind., died on Sunday afternoon, May 20, 2012, at her residence following a longtime battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
She was born Dec. 2, 1939 in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late James and Thelma Snyder Calkins.
On Jan. 30, 1960 in Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg, she married Stanley Kowalski, he survives.
She resided in Long Beach, Ind. for the past 47 years.
Membership rates for the Lyle G. Hall Community Pool in downtown Ridgway will remain unchanged for the upcoming season.
The Ridgway Borough Council approved a recommendation from the Planning, Grants and Recreation Committee Monday night for the family membership to cover up to five people and any additional members to be charged $10 per person.
"We did not change the season and weekly memberships or the daily admissions," said Council President Nina Stolburg. "They are the same as how they have been in the past."
ST. MARYS - At a recent stroke prevention seminar at Elk Regional Health Center's Education Center, some of the discussion focused on treatments available to stroke victims.
Katherine Brem, an occupational therapist with Elk Regional, said that recovery begins in the acute care hospital once a stroke victim is declared medically stable. Brem said it is at this point that the caregiver needs of a patient are assessed, with a physician determining a patient's strengths and deficits in designing a rehabilitation plan for them.

The sophomore starting catcher crushed a Josh Mitchell offering over the center field fence Tuesday in the fifth inning of a first round District 9 Class A playoff game to put the Rams in the quarterfinals.
Johnsonburg is scheduled to host Smethport at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Knothole Area Recreational Park.
The 3-run home run turned out to be the game-winner in Johnsonburg's eventual 3-0 win over the visiting Elkers, a victory that raised the Rams' record to 19-0.
Ridgway softball was honored with a banquet to celebrate the season at The Royal Inn Monday night.
Ridgway varsity head coach Gary Gerber II expressed appreciation to athletic director Manny Barbazzeni as well as the players.

Senior catcher Sydney Kovalyak expressed her appreciation to coaches, parents and the booster club for the banquet along with The Royal Inn. She spoke about the excitement the team had for the upcoming season.
The Ridgway Borough Council reviewed a recommendation from a Water, Sewer, Refuse and Street Committee to not enter into a water sales agreement with the Hunt Marcellus Operating Company.
A meeting was held with the committee on April 30 at 4 p.m. In attendance were committee members: John Casolo Jr., Ralph Dussia, Rick Parrish, Borough Manager Martin Schuller, Environmental Manager Paul McCurdy; and Mark Wagley and Doug Proffitt of Hunt Marcellus Operating Company.
ST. MARYS - With May marking National Stroke Awareness Month, a recent seminar was held at the Education Center at Elk Regional Health Center in an attempt to raise awareness surrounding the risk factors, contributing factors, and symptoms associated with strokes.
Thomas C. Detwiler, 60, of 42 Cottage Lane, Ridgway, died Sunday evening, May 20, 2012 at his residence following a lengthy battle with cancer.
He was born Jan. 8, 1952 in St. Marys, the son of Jane L. (Evans) Detwiler and the late Earl M. Detwiler.
He married Kathleen M. Liscinski on Dec. 28, 1974, and she survives.
Aiden J. Strack, age 48 days, passed away Saturday, May 19, 2012 at UPMC Magee Women's Hospital, Pittsburgh.
He was born April 2, 2012 in Pittsburgh to Jason V. and Madeline Urmann Strack.
Aiden was a member of St. Thomas More University Parish.
Aiden is survived by his parents of Indiana; by his brother, Jason, also of Indiana; maternal grandparents William and Therese Urmann of Ridgway; paternal grandmother Martha Strack of Freedom; and by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
