School district keeps taxes within index rate

The Ridgway Area School District Board of Directors approved a resolution to not raise taxes above the PDE [Public Department of Education] index rate for the 2012-2013 fiscal year.
According to board member Johna Holtz, the index rate for the district is 2.4 percent.
The approved resolution states that the district has determined that there will be no increase in the rate of any tax for the support of its public schools for the 2012-2013 fiscal year by more than the the index established by the PDE.

Johnsonburg wrestling to feature eight

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg wrestling team is looking to the upcoming season with optimism with a mix of new and returning wrestlers.
“We should be a competitive young team,” Johnsonburg coach Mike Votano said. “We have three kids that have wrestled previously who haven’t wrestled in the past couple years but they’re back out on the team.”
Zebb Zilcosky will be wrestling at 126 pounds and Votano said he has high expectations for him along with Cory Schneider at 138 pounds.

Ridgway gymnastics fields senior-laden team

Ridgway gymnastics will field a smaller amount of roster members this season and will have a solid core of seniors this season.
“We have a smaller team, we have 11 this year and five are seniors,” Ridgway coach Edna Maddalena said. “This is probably the best mesh, the best group of girls with us getting along and helping each other in the gym that we’ve had.”

Saint Lucia to be celebrated during annual festival

Saint Lucia is said to be one of the earliest saints.
As early as the sixth century she was venerated as a virgin martyr. Legends say that during Sweden’s terrible famine, a young woman dressed in white named Lucia came to offer help. She later suffered a gruesome martyrdom in order to remain a virgin and serve the poor. Later her duties where celebrated throughout Sweden as the feast day of Lucia, and is celebrated as a festival of lights.
Cultivated by Swedish founders, the Bethlehem Lutheran Church exemplifies their heritage by celebrating St. Lucia with an annual festival.

Caggeso to take polar plunge

Larry Caggeso of Ridgway will be jumping into the Allegheny River for 30 seconds this Sunday, Dec. 11, as a part of the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics in the Allegheny River.
Caggeso has been involved in polar plunges for two years. His first plunge was in Conneaut Lake in Ohio with his son, Michael Caggeso.
“My first year was in Conneaut Lake, and it was one of the first times in many years the lake froze over,” Caggeso said. “They had to bring in a back how to cut a hole for us to jump into.”

Post-sentencing hearing for Kralik continued

On Thursday afternoon Edward R. Kralik, 68, of St. Marys, went before Elk County President Judge Richard Masson as part of a Post-Conviction Relief Act (PCRA) hearing. Kralik pleaded guilty in May to third-degree murder in the June 2010 homicide of Clayton Lecker of St. Marys and is currently incarcerated at State Correction Institution (SCI) Smithfield in Huntingdon.
Leanne Nedza, Kralik's attorney, stated the purpose of the hearing is that Kralik "was not afforded effective assistance of council when he made his plea."

Campaign to save train station kicks off

A campaign to save the Pennsy Railroad Station along North Broad Street in downtown Ridgway has already begun.
Ridgway resident Dennis D. Heindl and wife Rose met with borough officials and Genessee & Wyoming property manager William V. Gentilman on Tuesday morning to present a $50,000 check to assist in restoring the outside of the train station to its original condition.
Heindl hopes to raise an additional $50,000 to $75,000.
As an added bonus, all contributors who donate $250 or more will have their name engraved on a plaque that will be displayed outside of the station.

Community recycling center gets boost with new baler

ST. MARYS - A new baler that will make recycling efforts easier and more efficient was delivered to the Elk County Community Recycling Center at the Stackpole Complex in St. Marys this week.
The main part of the baler was delivered and placed on Tuesday, while the tipper used to load recyclables into the baler arrived on Wednesday.

Consumer organizations say cell numbers not going public

An email warning readers that their cellphone numbers are set to be released to telemarketing companies this month has been declared a hoax.
The email instructs readers to register with the National Do Not Call (DNC) List in order to prevent themselves from receiving the imminent torrent of sales calls. The email says that registering with the DNC list "will only take a minute of your time, and blocks your number for five years."

Douglas A. McClelland, 49, of 314 Vernon Ave., Ridgway, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 7, 2011, at his residence following a lengthy illness. He was born June 27, 1962 son of Kenneth H. and Patricia A. (Eckert) McClelland.
