Flood plain ordinance approved in Horton Twp.

BROCKPORT – Horton Township Supervisor Jeff Johnson was reelected as chairman during Tuesday night's reorganizational meeting.
Newly-elected supervisor Levi P. Donahue was appointed as vice chairman. Donahue replaced outgoing supervisor Jack Carlson, who did not seek reelection.
Dennis Thompson was appointed as permanent secretary and treasurer.
Supervisors voted in favor of raising township employees' hourly wages by 25 cents.
David Pontzer was reappointed as solicitor.
The regular monthly meeting will continue to take place on the second Wednesday of the Month at 6 p.m.

WASHINGTON TWP. – The eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 near Falls Creek were reopened about 11 p.m. Monday evening following a pileup involving at least 15 vehicles and injuring 17 people that occurred at about 2:30 p.m. Monday afternoon in snowy weather.
Several crash reports were issued by the DuBois-based Pa. State Police Tuesday as of press time, with more reports expected later in the week. Several people involved sustained serious injuries, but no fatalities have been reported in the crash in Washington Township, Jefferson County.

Rams fall to Coudersport in wrestling action

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg wrestling lost 38-24 to Coudersport in a dual meet held Tuesday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
The Rams won four of the seven wrestled matches on the night as the Falcons used four forfeits to garner the overall dual win.

Guardian Angels receives grant to initiate new program

KERSEY – The Guardian Angel Center, Helpmates Charitable Giving Foundation, Inc. has recently received a grant from the Women Who Care to start a new program.
“We are working on starting a new disposable diapers program,” said Clythera Hornung, volunteer and co-grant contact. “It is a program that we have never done in the past, and it will be a nice benefit to our clients.”
Guardian Angels will lend a helping hand to those who may find it difficult to purchase diapers in an inexpensive manner.

Walter R. Ditch

Walter R. Ditch, 94, of Ridgway passed away peacefully on Friday, Dec. 30, 2011 of cardiac arrhythmia and advanced age. Walter was the patriarch of his family and recently celebrated his birthday with five generations in attendance. He was born Nov. 24, 1917 in Ramsaytown, Jefferson Co., Pa.
His family relocated to Ridgway when he was about 10 and with the exception of several years during WWII, spent the remainder of his life in the home he built on the family farm along Boot Jack.

Elkers take Boys Holiday Tournament championship

ST. MARYS – Ridgway was spurred on by a 24-point performance from senior guard Eric Matheson as the Elkers won the Elk County Boys Holiday Basketball Tournament with a 45-38 victory over Johnsonburg Friday night at St. Marys Area High School.

Lady Crusaders capture Elk County Tournament

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders stayed perfect on the season as they defeated the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch by a 41-35 score Friday night to capture the 2011 Elk County Girls’ Holiday Basketball Tournament crown. The Lady Crusaders are now 7-0.
The game was close for most of the 32 minutes of play. With 5:18 left in the game, the Lady Dutch were able to knot the score at 33 on a foul shot by Becky Krieg. In the closing minutes, Elk Catholic was able to outscore St. Marys 8-2 to win the game 41-35.
“It was nice to get the win,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner.

Ramettes win consolation game over Lady Elkers; Breier, Watts among those on All-Tourney Team

ST. MARYS – The Ramettes (3-5) were rarely contested Friday in a 54-20 victory over winless Ridgway in the consolation game of the 30th annual Elk County girls holiday basketball tournament.
The Ramettes were led by Brittany Watts with 15 points while Chelsea Benson and Rhianon Fowler contributed 10 points each; Ridgway's leading scorer was Nicole Breier with eight points.
Johnsonburg applied heavy defensive pressure early on to trigger multiple turnovers in the first quarter en route to a 20-3 lead.

Elkers take county crown

The Ridgway Elker boys basketball team won the Elk County Holiday Basketball Tournament with a 45-38 victory over Johnsonburg Friday night in the championship game held at St. Marys Area High School. Aaron Sorge, Jordan Lundin and Eric Matheson of Ridgway were selected to the All-Tournament Team with Matheson winning the MVP on offense. Quinn Luhr and Cameron Grumley were selected for Johnsonburg with Grumley winning the MVP on defense. Clayton Housler of Elk County Catholic and Justin Quiggle of St. Marys rounded out the All-Tournament Team.
