Crusader baseball holds on for 8-6 win over Bradford

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Crusaders held on to defeat the Bradford Owls by an 8-6 score Tuesday afternoon at Berwind Park.
After five innings of play, ECC held an 8-1 lead. The Owls scored four in the sixth and one in the seventh making the final score 8-6.
“We held on to win that one,” said ECCHS coach Father Eric Vogt.
“Rick (Pearsall) came in to finish it but it was our timely hitting that won the game. Joe McLaughlin had a clutch two-run double in the fifth inning,” said the coach.

Lady Crusaders shut out Brockway Lady Rovers, 4-0

ST. MARYS – The Lady Crusaders picked up their 11th win of the season on Tuesday afternoon at Benzinger Park as they defeated the visiting Brockway Lady Rovers by a 4-0 score. Taylor Schlimm pitched a one-hit shutout for the Lady Crusaders.
Schlimm faced only 24 batters in the game as she recorded five strikeouts while walking none. The only hit against Schlimm was a third-inning single. The other two girls who reached base against Schlimm got on on infield errors.
A. Wright took the loss for the Lady Rovers as she gave up four runs on six hits, struck out one and walked three.

Johnsonburg softball wins suspended game over Lady Elkers

JOHNSONBURG – The Ramettes waited nearly a month to finish the game and then they nearly lost it at the end.
Johnsonburg took a five-run lead into the bottom of the seventh inning but the Lady Elkers battled back and had the game-tying run aboard before a groundout ended the game.
The contest was originally halted after three-and-a-half innings April 12 as a torrential downpour in Ridgway halted play with Johnsonburg leading 11-7.

Ramettes use pair of big innings to down Lady Elkers softball, 8-3

JOHNSONBURG – The Ramettes used two big innings Monday to surge past the visiting Lady Elkers in an 8-3 victory at Knothole Recreational Park.
Deadlocked in a 2-2 game, the Ramettes exploded for three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and another three in the sixth inning to secure the victory.

St. Marys' Romain wins D9-AA Singles crown

DuBOIS - St. Marys Area’s Brandon Romain won the District 9-AA Singles Tennis Championship Monday afternoon at the DuBois Area High School courts.
Romain defeated DuBois Central’s David Gangeware 6-1, 6-1 in the championship match.
Brandon started the day by defeating Brockway’s Fabio Fortunato 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Romain beat DuBois Central’s Kevin Blakely 6-2, 6-0 to reach the finals.
Romain’s teammate Keith Meyer lost in the quarterfinals to Elk County Catholic’s Ben Wortman 6-4, 3-6, 0-6.
Wortman lost in the semifinals to DCC’s Gangewere 6-2, 6-3.

Gerald C. "Jerry" Nagel

Gerald C. "Jerry" Nagel, 81, of Hickory Street, Johnsonburg, died Friday, May 6, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center after a brief illness.
He was born July 17, 1929 in Philadelphia, son of the late Max and Fannie (Goldstein) Nagel.
On Oct. 10, 1992, he married Judith Ann Akers, who survives.
He lived most of his life in Philadelphia and lived in Johnsonburg since 1990. He was a graduate of Northeast High School of Philadelphia and received his Associate of Health Management degree from Temple University of Philadelphia.

Olice I. "Ollie" Woleslagle

Olice I. "Ollie" Woleslagle, 91, of 500 First Ave., Apt. 3, Johnsonburg, died Friday morning, May 6, 2011, at her residence following a brief illness.
She was born Aug. 5, 1919, in Sheffield, daughter of the late Joseph and Ella May Lee Starner.
She married Newell Woleslagle on Sept. 23, 1931, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 11, 1987.
She resided in Johnsonburg all her life, graduating from Johnsonburg High School in 1937.
She was a member of Johnsonburg United Methodist Church. She was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother and was an excellent seamstress.

John R. Gigliotti

John R. Gigliotti, 66, of 620 First Ave., Johnsonburg, died Thursday afternoon, May 5, 2011, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh, following a lengthy illness.
He was born May 11, 1944 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Guiseppe and Frances Carino Gigliotti.
He resided in Johnsonburg all his life and attended Johnsonburg High School.
He was a member of Holy Rosary Church, Prince of Piedmont Club, Central Hose Co. and the Johnsonburg Elks Club.

Florence L. (Phyllis) Dills, age 87, formerly of 1515 Front St., Ridgway, and most recently of the Ridgmont Assisted Living Facility, died early Sunday morning, May 8, 2011, at Pinecrest Manor in St. Marys following a brief illness.
