Elk County Catholic falls in first round of PIAA playoffs

BROCKWAY – The Serra Catholic Eagles ended the Elk County Catholic Crusader season Monday in the first round of the PIAA Class A tournament by an 11-5 score.
The game was played at the Brockway Area High School field.
The Eagles took advantage of a four-run first inning and a five-run sixth inning to record the victory. The Crusaders rallied for three runs in the home half of the seventh, but it was a little too late.

Wilcox Legion team downs Fox Township

WILCOX – The Wilcox American Legion team remained undefeated in the early season with a 5-2 victory over Fox Township Monday night at the Jones Township Community Park.
Wilcox (2-0) opened the game with a run in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Cole Peterson reached on an error at second base by Fox Township, an overthrow which led Peterson to second base. He moved to third on a Jesse Reynolds groundout and scored on a bunt by Mitchell Holmberg for the game's first run.
Johnsonburg coach Jeff Peterson said with Fox Township throwing pitcher Bob Vollmer, runs would be at a premium.

Crusaders defend 9-A crown, beat Falcons, 4-2

BRADFORD – The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team successfully defended their District 9 Class A championship Thursday by defeating the Coudersport Falcons by a 4-2 score in a game played at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
All the runs scored in the game came in the fourth inning as ECC scored four in the top half of the inning and the Falcons scored two in the home half of the inning.
“That was another great high school baseball game,” said ECCHS coach Father Eric Vogt. “All the runs came in one inning.”

Crusaders beat Clarion 2-0 to reach district finals

BROCKWAY – The Élk County Catholic Crusaders advanced to the District 9 Class A championship game by defeating the Clarion Bobcats by a 2-0 score in a semifinal game played at Brockway Area High School.
The Crusaders will play the Coudersport Falcons, 6-4 winners over the Brockway Rovers, on Thursday at a site and time to be announced.

Clarion Lady Cats eliminate Elk County Catholic softball from playoffs

BROCKWAY – The curtain came down on the 2011 softball season for the Lady Crusaders of Elk County Catholic on Tuesday afternoon when they were defeated by the Clarion Area High Lady Cats by a 9-7 score in the District 9-A semifinals at the Brockway field.
The Lady Crusaders trailed 9-2 going into the top half of the seventh inning and made a gallant effort to pull the game out, cutting it to 9-7 with two runners on bases before the final out of the game was recorded to give the Lady Cats a hard-earned 9-7 victory.

Johnsonburg track and field teams recognized with banquet

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg varsity and junior high track and field teams were honored with a banquet Tuesday night at the Johnsonburg Fire Hall.
Varsity head coach Rene Timm introduced the coaching staffs for both varsity and junior high. Timm was assisted by Brent Barraclough, Curt Breakey and Holly Morelli. The head coach for the junior high team was Dan Carnovale and Mike Haight was the assistant junior high coach. Robin Dubler was the booster president. Pat Polaski is vice president and the board was joined by Pam Anderson, Cindy Miller and Donna Shuey.

Paul C. “Ladd” Stahli

Paul C. “Ladd” Stahli, 88, of Oak Street, Johnsonburg, died Sunday, June 5, 2011 at UPMC Hamot of Erie after a brief illness.
He was born December 24, 1922 in Ridgway, son of the late Paul J. and Helena A. (Kilhoffer) Stahli.
On October 11, 1947, he married Florence “Sisser” (Yonker) Stahli, who preceded him in death on March 26, 2001.  

Stephen Dee (Reno) Burfield

Stephen Dee (Reno) Burfield, born Sept. 18, 1942 in DuBois, died Monday, May 16, 2011. He was the son of the late Darrell I. and Lillian R. (Swanson) Burfield-Gehman.  Step- son of Ardell Gehman.
Steve was a 1960 graduate of Ridgway High School, Ridgway, PA. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a crew member on the U.S.S. Constitution (Old Ironsides). Also, U.S. Naval Station, Keflavik, Iceland, and Headquarters of U.S. Naval Forces Europe, London, England.

Lucille C. "Lucy" Deemer

Lucille C. "Lucy" Deemer, 78, of Pinecrest Manor and formerly of 108 Irishtown Road, Kersey, died on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at Pinecrest Manor.
She was born May 2, 1924 in Johnsonburg, a daughter of the late Oran and Elizabeth Silvis Corbet. On March 24, 1944 in Brookville, she married the late Charles Lee Deemer Sr., who preceded her in death on October 17, 1976.

George R. DiNardo, 88, formerly of 707 First Ave., Johnsonburg, died Sunday at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 13, 1923, in Johnsonburg, son of the late Raphael and Serifina (Marrone) DiNardo.
He married Margaret (Mitzie) V. Geci on Nov. 28, 1946 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in St. Marys. She preceded him in death on June 2, 1970.
