Shirley Mae Bush, 84, previously of Ridgway and Sun City, Ariz., died Nov. 19, 2011, in Conneautville, Pa.
She was born April 28, 1927 in Kane, a daughter of the late George R. Anderson and Carrie Hathaway Anderson. She married William A. Bush, who preceded her in death.

Dilapidated church still a focal point for Portland Mills

The deteriorating church in Portland Mills has long been a safety issue for the residents of the small village along state Route 949 but the situation's outcome may be long from over.
"I'm going to bring it up again at the next [county] planning meeting and I've questioned it a couple of times," said Richard Wittman, supervisor and chairman of Spring Creek Township's Board of Supervisors. "There are things that we can do that [county officials] may be able to help us with."

Preliminary county solid waste management plan discussed

At Tuesday's joint meeting of the Elk County Solid Waste Advisory Committee (SWAC) and the Elk County Solid Waste Authority, consultant Michelle Nestor provided attendees with a draft of the Elk County solid waste management plan for review. The 10-year, comprehensive plan contains a number of recommendations and suggestions for the authority that could help it maintain current cost-effective services, expand services and increase revenue.

Area father seeks justice in daughter's drug-related death

RIDGWAY - Three years after the death of his 30-year-old daughter to prescription drug-related complications, a Ridgway man lobbying for stricter regulations on the prescription of controlled drugs, as well as greater accountability and oversight on the part of medical personnel, is now appealing to Gov. Tom Corbett in hopes that he take up the cause.

Michael W. Manno Jr., 86, of 325 Willow Street, Johnsonburg, died Monday evening, Nov. 21 at the Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
He was born Sept. 4, 1925 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Michael W. and Margaret Knopic Manno. He married the former Sophie A. Czekai in December of 1957 in St. Joseph Church, Mt. Jewett. She preceded him in death on March 15, 2010.

Martha Blessel Wonderly Brendlinger

Martha Blessel Wonderly Brendlinger, 86, of 764 Shelvey Summit Rd., Kersey, died Monday morning, Nov. 21, 2011 at her residence following a lengthy illness.
She was born April 22, 1925 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Albert and Appalonia (Portzer) Blessel.
She married John W. Wonderly, who preceded her in death on April 13, 1970. She then married John L. Brendlinger on Nov. 17, 1979, who survives.

Gerald C. “Gerry” Luchini

Gerald C. “Gerry” Luchini, 58, of Old Byrnedale Rd., Weedville, died Monday, Nov. 21, 2011 at the Altoona Regional Health Center, as a result of injuries sustained in an October 31 trucking accident.
He was born June 12, 1953 in Kersey, son of Helen M. (Fry) Luchini and the late Francis Luchini.
He married Joan A. (Smith) on Aug. 23, 1975, and she survives.

Kenneth E. Reinard

Kenneth E. Reinard, 81, of SR 948, Highland, died late Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011 at the Kane Lutheran Home after a lengthy illness.
He was born March 14, 1930 in Kane, son of the late Walter and Mary Leona (Reisinger) Reinard.
In 1969, he married Dorothy Ann Schneider, who survives.

Pennsy Station dodges wrecking ball

The Ridgway Borough Council approved a proposal Monday night which put an end to a 14-year dispute with the Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad and ultimately saving the Pennsy Railroad Station from demolition.
Ridgway resident Dennis D. Heindl provided a $50,000 grant to restore the outside of the building to its original form.
According to Heindl, no tax dollars will be used for the restoration and maintenance.
"It wasn't an easy sell, but we had to do it," Heindl said. "We will have it covered for down the road and hopefully this will never come up again."

Zwald wins holiday greeting card contest

A former Make-A-Wish recipient, 11-year-old Christine Zwald of Ridgway recently won a holiday greetings card contest.
Christine is the daughter of Mike and April Zwald of Ridgway. Her drawing entitled "Little Saint Nick" was granted one of the four designs for this year’s Make-A-Wish Foundation’s holiday greeting cards.
The winning designs were chosen from dozens of submissions. All of the participating children along with Christine were previously granted wishes to go to the Walt Disney World Resort.
