St. Leo's Summer Festival this weekend

Area residents and friends are set to gather Aug. 6-7 at the Ridgway Firemen's Lot for the 8th Annual St. Leo's Summer Festival.
The event will feature bingo on Saturday, Aug. 6 from 1-4 p.m., followed by a chicken barbecue open at 5 p.m. until food is sold out. The Kids Playland features new rides this year and will be open from 1-7 p.m.
The event also will have a new band performing this year as Green Eggs, a group from Lancaster, are scheduled to perform from 6-10 p.m.

New event caters to women in the outdoors

ST. MARYS – A new Women in the Outdoor event, aimed at introducing area women to outdoor activities in a friendly, laid-back, non-competitive atmosphere, is coming to Elk County on Sunday, Aug. 14 at the St. Marys Sportsmen's Club.
The day-long event, running from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m., is being hosted by the local Wapiti Roost chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) and is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Eleanor A. Galsick

Eleanor A. Galsick, 92, of 4117 Rasselas Rd., Wilcox, died Monday afternoon, August 1, 2011 at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys following a brief illness.
She was born on December 10, 1918 in Rasselas, daughter of the late Frederick and Gertrude Markert Brechtel.
She married Frank P. Galsick on September 21, 1940 in Holy Cross Church in Rasselas. He died June 20, 1988.
She resided in Rasselas all of her life and attended Rasselas schools and Wilcox High School.
She was a member of Holy Cross Church.

George William Gardner

August 3, 2011

George William Gardner, 76, of Peachtree Street Ext., Clermont, died Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. He is now walking with Jesus. Born May 3, 1935, in Portland Mills, he was the son of the late George William Johnson and Olive Claire Shaffer.
He was a milkman with V.T. Smith Dairy in DuBois for many years and a mechanic with G.S. Fibers-Hickory Springs in Clermont for over 14 years. George was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover. He was an avid NASCAR truck series fan.

Margaret "Maggie" Shields McCoy Schreiber

Margaret "Maggie" Shields McCoy Schreiber, 76, of 74 Glass Rd., St. Marys, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 following a lengthy battle with ovarian cancer.
She was born March 26, 1935, in Ford City, daughter of the late Edward L. and Anne McGinley Shields. In October 1993 in Wilcox, she married Robert J. "R.J." Schreiber, who survives. They were married by Fr. Norbert Wolf.

Noxious weed survey receives positive response

According to Elk County Conservation District Manager Steve Putt, the noxious and invasive weed survey is receiving a positive response.
Putt has surveyed over 290 acres of land in finding the common Bush Honeysuckle and thistle plants on every site.
As of the last Conservation District meeting, Monday, July 25, Putt has completed 11 of his 12 scheduled surveys.
"I'm finding a lot of Bush Honeysuckle, the stuff seems to be everywhere in this county," Putt said. "Thistle of course is everywhere, bull thistle and the other thistles."

David P. Smith

David P. Smith, 55 of, Hemlock Street, Kane, died on Sunday, July 31, 2011 at his home following a long illness.
He was born on November 17, 1955 in St. Marys, the son of the late William F. and Jane Krug Smith. On March 8,1986, in St. Leo’s Church in Ridgway, he married Mary Yonker, who survives.
He attended schools in St. Marys and had resided in St. Marys and Eldred before moving to Kane in 2006.

Area children participate in third annual Ridgway YMCA Kids Triathlon

August 1, 2011

The third annual Ridgway YMCA Kids Triathlon was held July 30 with 14 triathletes participating. Based at the Ridgway YMCA, the event consisted of swimming, biking, and running. The swim leg was held in the YMCA pool, and the bike and run legs were held on nearby streets. The transition area for T1 (swim to bike) and T2 (bike to run) was located behind the former Ridgway Armory building.

Church hosts 'rockin' bible school

The First Lutheran Church at 215 Cook Ave. received a strong turnout for this year's vacation bible school.
For the second year in a row, the Bethlehem Lutheran Church teamed up with the First Lutheran Church at 331 South St. to put on a rock n' roll themed religious experience for the children designed by Christian musical group The Go Fish Guys.

New baler would provide numerous benefits to center

ST. MARYS – A new baler is at the top of Elk County Recycling Coordinator Bekki Titchner's wish list for the Community Recycling Center, located in the Stackpole Complex in St. Marys. Titchner recently submitted an application to the Stackpole Hall Foundation requesting a grant to help cover the cost of the new equipment.
