Task force takes a look at Marcellus drilling

Members of the Elk County Gas Task Force learned more about the new Marcellus Shale drilling law that recently took effect at their Tuesday meeting, including a brief overview of shale deposits in the state.
State Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Oil and Gas Manager Craig Lobins discussed what a typical well site might look like and some history about drilling. According to Lobins, the first Marcellus well in Pennsylvania was drilled in 2004.

Elk County Women's Social looks to 'Spruce Up for Spring'

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Women's Social, sponsored by the St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce, is looking to 'Spruce Up for Spring' for its 24th annual dinner, which includes tips by local experts on interior design, painting, decorating and much more.

Darrel R. Roof, 74, of Elk Haven Nursing Home, and formerly of 235 Walnut St., Ridgway, died Tuesday, April 10, 2012, Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born May 25, 1937, in Ridgway, the son of the late Floyd and Vara Rhines Roof.
Mr. Roof was a lifelong Ridgway resident. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. He was active in the Special Olympics and the Boy Scouts of America.
He was the last of his immediate family.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy Engeman and Jean Orlosky; and by a nephew, James Engeman.

Community Center pool closes indefinitely

JOHNSONBURG – The basement of the Johnsonburg Community Center at 600 Market St. in Johnsonburg will be closed indefinitely beginning Sunday, April 15 due to mold in the swimming pool and archery room of the building.
Council accepted quotes from Kimball Environmental for $3,500 to remove the mold in the swimming pool and $6,200 for the archery room during Monday afternoon's regular borough council meeting.
Recreation Board president Ronald King said the basement can be reopened once construction is finished and the new dehumidifiers have been installed.

Results of live show to be announced tonight on 'The Voice'

St. Marys, Pa. – On last night's live show on NBC's "The Voice," Pip, the 19-year-old son of St. Marys native Jim Arnold, put on a rousing performance of The Killers' 'When You Were Young.' Voting opened immediately after the show, at 10 p.m. EST, and will continue through 10 a.m. today.
Pip and the five other remaining members of Adam Levine's team performed last night, and after the votes are tallied, the top three vote-getters will be saved while the remaining three will have one last chance to perform in hopes of being "saved" by Levine.

Dutch baseball downs Elkers 13-8 for first win of the season

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch baseball team picked up their first win of the season Monday when they handed the Ridgway Elkers a 13-8 loss at Berwind Park.

The Dutchmen held a slim 5-4 lead over the Elkers heading into the bottom half of the sixth inning. In that at bat, St. Marys scored eight runs on seven hits and two errors to take a 13-4 lead into the seventh inning. The Elkers were able to come up with four runs on three hits and two errors, making the final margin of victory for the Dutch 13-8.

Second annual Bunny Hop sees good turnout

ST. MARYS – It may have been a bit cool on Saturday morning, but the sunny weather still resulted in a good turnout for this year’s Bunny Hop 5K walk/run at Benzinger Park. The second annual event was the result of efforts by Taylor and Carly Frank and Michael, Daniel, and Rachael Paladino to raise money for The Brain Aneurysm Foundation.
“It was definitely better weather [this year] and I think we might have had more people,” said Taylor Frank prior to the 5K run.

Pip to vie for votes on 'The Voice' tonight

St. Marys, Pa. – Pip, the 19-year-old son of St. Marys native Jim Arnold, is set to once again appear on NBC's "The Voice" tonight, this time in a live show that will require people to vote to prevent him from being eliminated.

Audrey E. Dwyer, age 90, of Penn Street, Johnsonburg, died Sunday, April 8, 2012, at Elk Regional Health Center after a lengthy illness.
She was born July 24, 1921 in Kane, daughter of the late Edward and Frances (Wold) Kranking. She married Daniel A. Dwyer on June 27, 1953; he preceded her in death Oct. 2, 1994.
A 1939 graduate of Johnsonburg High School, she worked at Indiantown Gap military base during WWII and also worked many years with the Ubel Fashion Shop, Furniture Store and Funeral Home.

Earl E. Robertson Jr., 88, of Elk Haven Nursing Home, and formerly of Ridgway and Bethel Park, Pa., died on Friday, April 6, 2012 at Elk Haven Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 27, 1924 in Wilkinsburg, a son of the late Earl E. and Martha G. Holiday Robertson Sr.
On March 17, 1948 in Pittsburgh, he married the late Victorine Walter Robertson, who preceded him in death on Aug. 7, 2010.
