Elkers down Rams, 2-1

Ridgway boys soccer won 2-1 over Johnsonburg Saturday morning at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
The two teams competed to a scoreless first 40 minutes of play and continued in a 0-0 tie for much of the second half.

Lois A. Wester Crandall

Lois A. Wester Crandall, 92, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011.
She was born November 7, 1918 on the Lyons Road, Sherman, N.Y., the daughter of the late Henry and Ella Lyon Wester.
On Nov. 1, 1941, in Sherman, N.Y., she married Clyde R. Crandall, and he preceded her in death on March 22, 1994.
She was a 1935 graduate of Sherman Central School and a 1939 graduate of the New York State College for Teachers at Albany, N.Y. She subsequently did graduate work under Syracuse University and the New York State College at Fredonia. She taught for 20 years at Sherman Central School.

Richard “Dick” C. Johnson

Richard “Dick” C. Johnson, 99, of 929 Burning Well Rd., Wilcox, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at Pinecrest Manor in St. Marys.
Born Nov. 15, 1911, in Wilcox, he was a son of Peter and Freda Carlson Johnson.
He married Lillian Swanson on March 27, 1946. She preceded him in death on Jan. 19, 1993.
Mr. Johnson served in the U.S. Army with the 4th Division during World War II.
He was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church and belonged to the Wilcox Masonic Lodge. He also was a member of the Wilcox American Legion and the Wilcox Senior Center.

Terror haunts Johnsonburg football in 26-13 win

JOHNSONBURG – Otto-Eldred sophomore quarterback Dakota Vaughn set the tone early for the Terror (1-2) and scored all four touchdowns in a 26-13 win Friday night over the Johnsonburg Rams (0-3).
Vaughn surprised the Rams right from the get-go with a 63-yard pass play to sophomore halfback/cornerback Coy Hoffman to highlight a four-play, 76-yard drive. Vaughn broke the plane from a yard out to give the Terror an early 6-0 lead.

Crusaders fall to Coudersport

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Crusader football squad was handed their first loss of the season on Friday evening, falling to the Coudersport Falcons 12-7 in a match played at Dutch Country Stadium.
"We never really got the offense going," said ECC coach Travis Skrzypek. "I thought we had a nice drive in the third and again in the fourth. We had to punch in at the end of the game and we didn't get the job done."

Lady Dutch fall to Ridgway, 4-0

ST. MARYS – It was sunny but cool on Friday afternoon for the opening round match-up between St. Marys and Ridgway at St. Marys Area High School's soccer field in this year's Bucktail Tournament. St. Marys put up a good fight, but the Lady Elkers eventually emerged with the 4-0 victory to advance to the finals.
"We played more younger players today because of injuries. We want to do well tomorrow. Our younger players are showing improvement. Ridgway is a better team right now, and I wish them luck in the final," said St. Marys coach Dr. Bob Schmidt.

Genocide survivor lives to tell her story

New York Times bestseller Immaculee Ilibagiza gave a powerful presentation in the Ridgway Area High School auditorium Thursday night recounting her personal experience of the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
Deacon Larry Caggeso opened the program introducing Immaculee.

Lady Elkers defeat Lady Dutch

Despite dropping the first set, Ridgway regrouped Thursday night to top St. Marys 3-1 (12-25, 25-20, 25-13, 25-14) to move to 5-0 in regular season play.
“We started off slow [Thursday] and St. Marys has some really nice hard hitters,” said Ridgway head girls varsity volleyball coach Janet Redmond. “They had some really good serves that really caught us off guard, we just couldn’t return them.
“We had some problems with that and we just didn’t move.”

Lady Elkers go 3-1 in golf match

Laurel Mill Golf Course in Ridgway hosted a 6-team golf match Thursday and Ridgway took home a 3-1 showing,
“Our girls continued their great play with a 3-1 record on the day,” said Ridgway head girls golf coach Gary Gerber II.
Ridgway seniors Brittanei Neubert and Selena Scarnati continue to be near the top of the leaderboard after spending the last week trading medalist honors.
Neubert paced the Lady Elkers with 49 but medalist honors went to Savannah Brosky of Brockway, who made it to the clubhouse with 46. Scarnati carded a 54 for the day.

Ramettes lose to Bradford

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg volleyball lost 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-17) against Bradford in action at Johnsonburg Area High School Thursday night.
After winning the first set by a 25-10 score, Bradford scored the first two points of the second set before the Ramettes answered with two of their own, highlighted by a Chelsea Benson kill. The teams then alternated the next four points before Johnsonburg scored three of the next four to take a 7-5 lead.
