MT. JEWETT âÂ A total of 45 bears harvested throughout five different counties were processed at the Pennsylvania Game Commission's bear check station in Mt. Jewett on Saturday, the opening day of this year's four-day bear season. Of those bears, the majority-- 31-- were female, and most had been harvested in McKean County.
MT. JEWETT âÂ The number of bears harvested on the opening day of the state's four-day bear season this year and processed at the Pennsylvania Game Commission's bear check station in Mt. Jewett was considerably lower this year compared to 2011. A total of 45 bears were brought to the check station throughout the day on Saturday, whereas 122 were processed at the site on the opening day of the season last year.
BRADFORD âÂ Port Allegany quarterback Matt Bodamer put on an impressive show Friday night as he rushed for 122 yards and threw for 309, leading the top-seeded and undefeated Gators to a 48-7 rout of the Elk County Catholic Crusaders in a District 9 semi-final contest at Parkway Field in Bradford.
The Gators led all the way, racking up a 21-0 lead before the Crusaders were able to score their lone touchdown midway through the second quarter. Port responded with 27 unanswered points in the second half to come away with the victory.

Laetitia M. "Lettie" (White) McHale, 55, of Cranberry Township, died Thursday evening, Nov. 15, 2012, after an extended illness.
Patricia Pontzer Lanese, 72, of Highland View Health Care in Brockway, passed away Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, at her residence.
She was born Feb. 16, 1940, in Ridgway, the daughter of Robert and Bertha Friery Pontzer. She graduated from Ridgway Area High School, Class of 1958.
According to Elk County Catholic High School Athletic Director Aaron Straub, 237 students at the high school and middle school levels participated in the fall 2012 season for ECCHS athletics. He added that about 57 coaches worked with those athletes for to prepare them for around 200 athletic contests held from August through November. Two of the school's fall sports teams-- varsity football and cheerleading-- are still competing and have not yet wrapped up their seasons.
Ridgway Area Middle School students gave their first performance of "Nonsense in the North Woods" Thursday night to a packed crowd in the middle/high school auditorium.
ST. MARYS â Elk Regional Health Systemâs âKeepsake Programâ will again offer Christmas tree ornaments for purchase by area residents, with a very special ornament available this year.
Jennifer Bauer, projects director for the Elk Regional Health System Auxiliary, said while researching this year's collection she discovered a bell ornament by manufacturer Nyco, the same company that has produced the other bell ornaments that have been so popular with area residents in the past. The bell is made using the traditional art of cloisonnÃ© and is decorated with Swarovski crystals.
Joanne B. Hoffman, 78, of 1935 Bear Creek Rd., died following Wednesday evening, Nov. 14, 2012, at the home of her daughter following an illness of the past nine months.
She was born July 25, 1934 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Earl T. and Marie P. [Baumgratz] Steis.
She married David L. Young on Dec. 10, 1953, he preceded her in death on Dec. 11, 1988; she then married James A. Hoffman on Feb. 14, 1990, and he survives.
