Retiring Gerber honored at Ridgway wrestling banquet

The Ridgway wrestling banquet usually occurs to celebrate the accomplishments of the team from the recently completed season.
This year's banquet also honored the career of retiring Ridgway wrestling head coach Gary Gerber as it was a time to reflect on his many career highlights Friday night at Aiello Cafe.
"It has been an honor and a privilege to coach this team for all these years," Gerber said. "There are some people in Ridgway that have more money than I do but I am the richest man in Ridgway. I have memories that go back for years."

Ridgway wrestling team honored with banquet

The Ridgway wrestling program was honored with a banquet held Friday night at Aiello Cafe in Ridgway.
Corey Bush was given a plaque commemorating his induction into the Ridgway Wrestling Hall of Fame as he was a 3-time state placewinner. He also won the Bruno Iorfido Memorial Outstanding Wrestler Award.
"He's a coach's dream," Gerber said. "A pleasure to coach, a hard worker. He kept himself under control and worked hard. He is a tremendous kid to coach, he listens. He knew he wanted to be successful from the first time he stepped on the mat in ninth grade and he made it happen."

Mildred M. Haberberger, 92, of 1036 Theresia St., St. Marys, died at Elk Regional Health Center on Friday morning, March 30, 2012.
She was born Aug. 20, 1919 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late John A. and Cecilia M. Feldbauer Braun.
On July 6, 1945 in St. Marys Church, she married the late Cletus J. "Beeps" Haberberger, who preceded her in death Feb. 2, 1990.

Coin event provides valuable opportunity

ST. MARYS – Parent company THR & Associates is bringing the International Coin Collectors Association to St. Marys in order to purchase coins, paper currency, gold and silver from area residents for their global network of collectors, dealers and refineries.
The free event is open to the public and will be held at the Comfort Inn, 195 Comfort Lane, St. Marys, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, April 2 through Friday, April 6.

WIC continues to strengthen

Women and Infant Care (WIC), a program offered through the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission, continues to thrive.
"Our breastfeeding education component of WIC continues to strengthen," said Julie Kasmierski, WIC director. "Our breastfeeding peer counseling contacts are at an all-time high. During the month of January, our breastfeeding peer counselors had 284 contacts with pregnant and/or breastfeeding mothers."
The figure climbed to 323 contacts in February.

Thomas P. "Tom" Weaver

Thomas P. "Tom" Weaver, 63, of 613 First Ave., Johnsonburg, died Wednesday evening, March 28, 2012, at his residence following an illness of 15 months.
He was born on March 24, 1949 in Vestaburg, son of the late Clarence and Isabelle Kittle Weaver.
He married Mary Winifred Hoh on March 17, 1973 in Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg, and she survives.

Kathleen R. Smith

Kathleen R. Smith, age 74, of 32 1/2 Morgan Ave., Ridgway died early Thursday morning, March 29, 2012 at the DuBois Nursing Home.
She was born August 24, 1937 in Shurite, Allegheny County. She was married to Raymond C. Smith, he preceded her in death on August 31, 2011. She had resided in Ridgway all of her life and was Protestant by faith.

Crusaders win home opener 7-2 over Elkers

The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team picked up a 7-2 victory over the Ridgway Elkers in their home opener at Berwind Park on Thursday afternoon.
Ridgway put a run on the board in the top of the first inning to take an early lead, but the Crusaders immediately answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a lead that they would never relinquish.
