Ramettes upset Kane

JOHNSONBURG – The Ramettes got a 20-point night out of junior Brittany Watts as the Ramettes (4-5) stunned Kane (8-3) Friday in a 46-42 upset in Paper City.
After going cold at the charity stripe for the latter part of the fourth quarter while trying to secure the game, Johnsonburg got its 4-point cushion as Kassa Kocjancic converted her second free throw attempt for the 46-42 lead with six seconds on the clock. A final uncontested 3-point try sailed over the hoop as the Ramettes shocked the Lady Wolves.

Lady Elkers score season-high in points

Ridgway girls basketball scored a season-high in points in a 54-36 loss to Brockway Friday night at Ridgway Area High School.
The Lady Elkers were paced with 20 points from Ridgway senior Nicole Breier.
"I thought Nicole played an awesome game," Ridgway coach Glenn Schauer said. "That's the Nicole we need. All five starters played really well. Offensively, we probably played our best game of the year."

Authority approves operating budget

The Ridgway Township Municipal Authority approved the 2012 estimated operating budget during Thursday night's regular meeting.
Accountant Jeff Schutz estimates a total operating revenue of $993,910 with a capital expense of $75,000.
"I did hear some discussion of grinder pumps at Montmorenci and other issues that you may need to spend some money," Schutz said. "So you will have that $75,000."
According to Schutz, the 2012 budget is "in comparison" with the 2011 budget.

Crusaders down Sheffield

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders defeated the Sheffield Wolverines 63-57 last night in a game played at ECCHS.
Sheffield led for the first half of the contest, holding a 8-6 advantage at the end of the first period and a 17-15 lead at halftime. ECC came to life in the second half, taking a 36-29 lead at the end of the third quarter and then holding on for the 63-57 victory.
"It was a good win," said ECC coach Aaron Straub. "Any time you can give up 28 points in the fourth quarter and still win has got to be a good one."

Ridgway wrestling has six pins in 22-point win over St. Marys

Ridgway wrestling won six matches by pinfall and nine overall in a 46-24 victory over St. Marys Thursday night at Ridgway Area High School.
"The kids were very aggressive," Ridgway coach Gary Gerber said. "We're real pleased because we've been under the weather. The kids wrestled hard, there were some real pleasant surprises there."
The match opened at 182 pounds as Kyle Caggiano bumped up to wrestle Joe McLaughlin of St. Marys.

LaValle re-elected as chairman

The Ridgway Township Municipal Authority held a reorganizational meeting Thursday night prior to the regular meeting to appoint officials.
Officials voted unanimously to reappoint Ed LaValle as chairman to the municipal authority.
Bill Seely was appointed as vice chairman and Bill Briggs will remain as treasurer.
A vacancy on the board exists for a recording secretary. Janis E. Kemmer resigned earlier from the position as she was elected in November 2011 as an Elk County commissioner.

Lillian Detar

Lillian Detar, age 91, of 326 Westchester Blvd., Kenmore, N.Y., passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011, at her residence.
She was born Sept. 5, 1920, to Lottie Rose and Joseph Szymanski. She married the late Homer "Ike" Detar of Kane, he preceded her in death in 1992.
She is survived by one daughter, Patricia, Mrs. Williams Scanlon of Warren, Ohio; two grandchildren, Suzie, Mrs. Keith Callen of Sarver, Pa., and Brian Scanlon and his wife Amanda of Evans City, Pa.; and five great-grandchildren, Samantha and Josephine Scanlon, and Joshua, Tristan and Kihia Callen.

Lady Elkers fall to DuBois, 59-18

Ridgway girls basketball lost 59-18 to DuBois Wednesday night at Ridgway Area High School.
DuBois opened on a 6-0 run to start the game. Cara LaBrasca started with a basket for DuBois, then Jordan Fairman added consecutive field goals.
Ridgway then responded with five straight points as Nicole Breier hit a short field goal in the post and Jenni Thomas buried a 3-pointer for the Lady Elkers.

Lady Crusaders down Lady Rovers, 47-29

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team rolled to a 47-29 victory over the Brockway Lady Rovers Wednesday evening at ECCHS.
The two teams kept the score fairly close throughout the first half. ECC held a 10-7 lead at the end of the first period and extended their advantage to 25-15 at halftime. Brockway closed the gap slightly by the end of the third period, reducing ECC's advantage to 31-22.
"We looked a little rusty tonight, but we're playing good defense again," said ECC coach Ken Pistner.

Stackpole-Hall, 4-H collaborate on youth program

A grant through the Stackpole-Hall Foundation has initiated an out-of-school youth program to be carried out by a collaboration with the Ridgway YMCA and the Elk County 4-H Program.
The 4-H program will open the door for Elk County children between the ages of eight and 18 years old to learn leadership, teamwork and other valuable skills that will encourage them to be proactive forces within the community.
According to 4-H Out-Of-School Programs Coordinator Jody Johnson, the program will focus on a variety of STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering and Math] activities.
