Mass mailer concerns residents

A mass letter mailed to Ridgway area residents claiming water service coverage to homeowners is causing concern.
Ridgway Borough Manager Martin Schuller is advising residents to be wary of a letter from HomeServe USA.
Schuller says he is not advising residents to use or not to use the service, but to read the fine print before making any decisions.

Rotary presents award to five members

Ridgway Rotary club president Pat Brennan noted the Paul Harris fellowship is named for Paul Harris, founder of Rotary with three business associates in Chicago in 1905.
The fellowship was established in his honor in 1957 to express appreciation for a contribution of the humanitarian and education program of the Rotary International Foundation.
"Today we are privileged and honored to recognize not one but five of our membership as Paul Harris fellows," Brennan said.

Johnsonburg man charged with child pornography headed to trial

A Johnsonburg man charged with 80 counts of possessing child pornography and 13 counts of sexual abuse of children, among other related offenses, is headed to trial with jury selection in the Commonwealth vs. Robert Gene Fitzgerald, 55, of Johnsonburg, scheduled for June.
In his affidavit, investigating officer David Cuneo of the Johnsonburg Police reports that on Dec. 17, 2011 he was dispatched to 307 Spruce St., the home of Laura Reffitt, in response to a report of identity theft.

Kersey man withdraws guilty plea to sexual assault charges

At Monday's Return Day at the Elk County Courthouse in Ridgway, Jack Edward Hepler, 24, of Kersey, withdrew his previous plea of guilty to the charge of aggravated indecent assault, a second-degree felony.
The incident is alleged to have occurred while Hepler babysat the victim, his first cousin, as her parents were out of town for the evening.
In an interview with Trooper Matthew Higgins of the Ridgway-based state police on July 8, 2011, the alleged victim, with her parents present, related that on the night of the incident she was awoke in her bed with Hepler "on top of her."

DRMC's St. Marys building set to open March 12

FOX TWP. – DuBois Regional's St. Marys Community Medical Building will open officially on Monday, March 12. The 30,000 square-foot building, located in front of the Walmart on the Million Dollar Highway in Fox Township, will house a number of diagnostic services, including laboratory, diagnostic imaging, digital X-ray, ultrasound, breast care and digital mammography, bone density and electrocardiograms (EKGs), as well as several specialists and family and women's health practices.

Authority looks to purchase yard ramp

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Solid Waste Authority is in the market for a yard ramp for use at their Community Recycling Center, located at the Stackpole Complex in St. Marys. The purchase of a ramp for under a cost of $10,000 was recently approved by the authority at their most recent meeting.
According to Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner, a yard ramp is necessary because there is no room to install a loading dock at the recycling facility.

Lorrayne Cuthbert Fogg

Lorrayne Cuthbert Fogg, age 85, of Millersville, passed away on Monday, March 5, 2012, at Hospice of Lancaster County in Mt. Joy.
Born in Laurel Springs, N.J., she was the daughter of the late William Earl Cuthbert and Verna Bressler Cuthbert.
She was a graduate of Ridgway High School and the former Indiana State Teacher’s College. She also took graduate courses at the University of Pittsburgh, Penn State, Westminster College at Princeton and Oxford University in England.

Elkers win fifth chapter over Rams, take district crown

CLARION – The Ridgway Elkers don't mind winning championships at the Johnsonburg Rams' expense.
After taking the county and league titles over Johnsonburg earlier this season, the Elkers defeated the Rams 40-37 Saturday night-- the fourth time in five tries this season-- and won the District 9 Class A championship in the process.

Elkers send three to Hershey; Bush, Caggiano win regional titles

SHARON – Last year, Ridgway wrestling had only one state qualifier and that was a third-place finish.
What a difference a year makes.
Ridgway advanced three to the PIAA Individual Wrestling Championship and garnered two regional championships at the conclusion of the PIAA Class AA Regional Championships Saturday at Sharon High School.
Corey Bush (126 pounds) won his second regional championship after finishing third last season. Kyle Caggiano won his first regional gold medal at 160 pounds and Jake Himes became a first-time state qualifier at 170 pounds with a third-place finish.

Crusaders fight off Lions 77-66 in D9 consolation contest

CLARION – The Elk County Catholic Crusaders put in a strong performance on Saturday afternoon in the District 9 boys’ Class A consolation game at Clarion University’s Tippin Gymnasium, going up by 17 at one point early in the fourth quarter before fending off a late rally by Clarion-Limestone to come away with a 77-66 victory.
