ECC presented Charity and Social Service Honors medal for ECHO

ST. MARYS – Elk County Catholic High School seniors Sara Kucenski and Jonathan Leuschel traveled to Washington, D.C. from April 13-15 to serve as co-ambassadors on behalf of ECC to accept an award during the 2012 Charity and Social Services Honors Program at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

Mary Theresa Viglione Popson, 79, of Highland View Health Care, Brockway, passed away peacefully, Monday, April 30, 2012, after an extended illness.
She was born Jan. 16, 1933, in Ridgway, the daughter of Joseph and Lena Caggeso Viglione. On Sept. 6, 1969, she married James L. Popson, he predeceased her on Sept. 3, 2003.

Hollaus R. "Hollie" Smith, 79, of Willow Street, Johnsonburg, died Monday, April 30, 2012 at Pinecrest Manor after a brief illness.
He was born on Sept. 19, 1932 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Hollaus W. and Jennie (Wheeler) Smith.
He married Jane L. (Steudler) on Jan. 7, 1952 in Johnsonburg, she survives.

Area crews battle afternoon blaze near Benezette

BENEZETTE – Area fire crews spent several hours battling a fire that burned several acres along SR 555, east of Benezette, on Sunday afternoon.
According to Elk County 911 email alerts, the Jay Township Volunteer Fire Department was called out to the area of 10461 Route 555 between Hulett Street and Summerson Road at 3:40 p.m. The Fox Township Volunteer Fire Department and Crystal Fire Department from St. Marys were both called to the scene at 4:12 p.m.

31st Annual Ridgway Triathlon deemed a success

The foursome of Wee J. Fernan, Charlie Gausman, Scott Jacobs and Steve Martin earned the overall best time on Saturday in the 31st installment of the Ridgway Triathlon.
Fernan owned the best time in the 5-mile run at 29 minutes and nine seconds while Gausman took third place in the 15-mile bike ride. Jacobs and Martin finished the 9-mile canoe race in one hour, 24 minutes and 39 seconds. The foursome finished in two hours, 34 minutes and 22 seconds.

Best-selling author holds book signing at gathering in St. Marys

ST. MARYS – A crowd of nearly 100 people gathered for  RoseMarie Terenzio's "Fairy Tale Interrupted" book signing on Friday evening at the St. Marys Public Library, with all proceeds from book sales benefitting the library.
The event marked the kickoff of the library's 100th anniversary, which is being celebrated in July. In May the library plans to roll out their new e-book program as well, according to Scarlette Corbin, library executive director.

Theresa M. Bussoletti

Theresa M. Bussoletti, 90, of 8 Depot St., Ridgway, died Sunday morning at Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness. She was born May 27, 1921 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Domenic and Rita (Fiorentino) Dagustine. She married Eugene F. Bussoletti on Oct. 7, 1944 in St. Leo Catholic Church, he preceded her in death on July 26, 1998. She had resided in Ridgway all of her life and was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church. She was a graduate of the Ridgway High School. Terry enjoyed her many friends and loved sharing her home with them. There was always coffee and good times there.

Annual Wine and Herb Tour nears

The Ridgway-Elk County Chamber of Commerce is hosting its Fifth Annual Wine and Herb "Taste of the Town Tour" to be held Friday, May 4 from 5-9 p.m. in downtown Ridgway.
Ridgway-Elk County Chamber of Commerce Administrative Assistant Mary Kucenski invites participants to stroll along historic Main Street, visiting unique shops and sampling local wines and foods.

Rams flex pitching muscles in win over Terror

JOHNSONBURG – The Rams used a 1-2 pitching combination of Cole Peterson and Mitchell Holmberg to combine on a 3-hit shutout Friday as Johnsonburg toppled visiting Otto-Eldred, 7-0.
Peterson started the first two innings and scattered one hit and one walk while striking out six batters before leaving with a 1-0 lead. He turned the ball over to Holmberg who pitched three innings of shutout ball with four strikeouts.
Peterson would return to the mound in the sixth inning and scattered another hit in two innings of work but secured the shutout win.
