Leander Anthony “Lee” Hoffman

Leander Anthony “Lee” Hoffman, 89, of 107 Beech Rd., St. Marys, died on Friday, Sept. 7, 2012 at home after a brief illness.
He was born Jan. 18, 1923, in St. Marys, son of the late Anthony C. and Marie Sporner Hoffman.
On June 26, 1948, in the Sacred Heart Church, he married Betty Jane Hoffman, who died on June 11, 2011, just weeks shy of their 63rd wedding anniversary.
Lee was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys Parochial School.

Lady Elkers defeat Kane, 6-2

Ridgway girls soccer earned its first win of the season in its home opener with a 6-2 victory over Kane Monday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Ridgway opened the season with a 2-1 loss at Curwensville, a team Lady Elker head coach Greg Maddalena thinks is a top team in the district.

Johnsonburg Ramettes down Bradford, 7-2

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg girls varsity tennis team continued their winning ways Monday with a 7-2 win over visiting Bradford.
"This is how these girls can play, from top to bottom they all played well and I'm very proud of them," said Johnsonburg head varsity girls tennis coach Gregg Dauber following the win. "It was a big turnaround from last week's loss to Punxsutawney."
At No. 1 singles, Johnsonburg's Riley Fannin won 6-1, 6-1 over Bradford's Montgomery Burgoon.

ECC has seen many changes over the past 50 years

ST. MARYS – Fifty years ago today, on Monday, Sept. 10, 1962, Elk County Christian High School officially opened its doors to students for the first time, replacing Central Catholic High School.
The newly constructed high school was under the direction of Headmaster Rev. Daniel J. Martin and boasted an enrollment of 725 students and a faculty of 40 teachers.

Hunt of a Lifetime benefit planned for Sept. 22-23

ST. MARYS – The Bucktail Archers Association is currently gearing up for its second biannual, and third overall, benefit event to raise funds for the Hunt of a Lifetime Foundation, Inc. The group, in conjunction with the St. Marys Sportsmen's Club and Bowfishing Association of America, will be holding a variety of activities at the St. Marys Sportsmen's Club, located at 1339 Glen Hazel Rd. in St. Marys, on Saturday, Sept. 22 and Sunday, Sept. 23.

Car show benefits Make-A-Wish

ST. MARYS – An antique and classic car show held Saturday, Sept. 15 will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The Third Annual Antique Class Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Tractor Supply parking lot located along the Million Dollar Highway in St. Marys.
"This is a new adventure for us," said event co-coordinator Leah Leuschel. "The car show is three years in the making. Our first year was amazing, we had 30 to 40 cars there and we are hoping to double that this year."
Registration for the event is $10 and will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Elk County Catholic Crusaders shut out Wolverines, 18-0

SHEFFIELD — After a flat start on Saturday afternoon at Sheffield Area High School, the Elk County Catholic Crusaders used a strong second half to record an 18-0 win over the Wolverines and improve to 2-0 on the season.
While it rained periodically throughout the contest, the weather did not seem to have much of an impact on the game. ECC coach Travis Skrzypek blamed his squad’s first-half struggles on a lack of motivation throughout the week.
“When you practice flat all week and you’re flat before the game, you normally play flat,” Skrzypek said.

Lady Crusader volleyball wins Elk County Tournament

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader volleyball team captured the 16th annual Elk County Volleyball Tournament championship on Saturday by defeating St. Marys Area in the championship match.
Elk Catholic defeated St. Marys in two games, 25-13 and 25-15.
The Ridgway Lady Elkers took third place by defeating the Johnsonburg Ramettes by a 30-18 score in the consolation match.

Crusaders win Elk County Soccer Tournament

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders won the Elk County Soccer Tournament with a 4-0 victory over Redbank Valley Saturday at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
"I think the kids are happy to carry on a tradition," Elk County Catholic coach Adam Bailey said.
The first 25 minutes of the match were fairly evenly played. Redbank Valley had a pair of corner kicks in the first five minutes but were unable to get any good scoring chances out of them. ECC would take a 1-0 lead with 14:54 left in the first half as Ian Herzing would get the first goal.

Elkers win consolation game over St. Marys, 3-2

Ridgway boys soccer won 3-2 over St. Marys in the consolation game of the Elk County Soccer Tournament held Saturday morning at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Chris Persinger scored the game-winning goal as he was able to get enough of a crossing pass to roll it into the net on a wet field after a second half downpour.
