Peterson steals the show in 5-2 win over Fox Township

WILCOX – Cole Peterson made the start on the mound Wednesday for Wilcox in American Legion baseball against Fox Township and stole the show with not only a complete game 5-2 win but also a perfect 4 for 4 showing at the plate.
Peterson struck out nine batters on the night while working out of trouble with runners in scoring position four times.

Ridgway minor league all-stars host Warren

The Ridgway minor league softball all-stars hosted Warren on Wednesday night with Warren winning 10-0 in four innings at the Ridgway Little League fields along Grant Road.
Warren starting pitcher Julia Lobdell was a dominant force on the mound as she finished with 11 strikeouts and three walks without surrendering a hit in her four innings pitched.

Fritz family helping others make beautiful music

ST. MARYS – If you’ve caught a local high school (musical) performance lately or attended your child’s recital, chances are Fred and Marie Fritz have been behind the scenes making sure the instruments used are hitting the perfect pitch.
The St. Marys couple owns Fritz Pianos and Organs, a family business that began with Fred’s father, the late Hal Fritz, and also included Fred's brother, the late Frank Fritz, who managed the business's DuBois store until his death nine years ago.
Fred said it’s hard for him to imagine doing something else.

Protect pets from Lyme disease

It’s not just people who are being affected by increasing levels of Lyme disease—pets need to be protected, too.
Jesse Shirey, DVM, of Elk County Veterinary Clinic, said cases are appearing with increasing frequency in the animal world as well. His latest statistics show that the clinic saw 240 cases of dogs testing positive for Lyme disease from October 2011 to October 2012.
“We see a ton of Lyme disease,” Shirey said. “We see a high incidence.

Armyworms on the march in St. Marys

ST. MARYS – "It's worse than a plague," said Pete Braun of Braun's Farm in St. Marys regarding the destruction of crops caused by invading armyworms.
Braun, like many area farmers, is suffering firsthand from the devastation caused by the armyworm, or Pseudaleta unipuncta (Haworth), a native species widely distributed throughout the United States, east of the Rocky Mountains.

St. Marys downs Johnsonburg behind gem from Kraus

JOHNSONBURG – With a dominating performance from Gabe Kraus on the mound, St. Marys Major League All-Stars earned a 10-0 4-inning win over Johnsonburg.
Kraus frustrated the opposition in a 5-strikeout, 1-hit effort.
Meanwhile, St. Marys used a 3-run second inning and 5-run fifth to fuel the shutout victory.
St. Marys got a run across in the bottom of the first inning. Ryan Heary reached base with a 2-out single to center field and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kraus reached on an error at shortstop which allowed Heary to score from second for the early 1-0 lead.

Solid Waste Authority seeking equipment grant

The Elk County Solid Waste Authority's recycling program grant application to the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will be sent out this week, according to Elk County Recycling/Solid Waste Coordinator Bekki Titchner.
At Tuesday's meeting of the authority, Titchner said the 902 grant funding through the state may be used for recycling equipment and the authority has requested several needed items for the Elk County Community Recycling Center.

Armyworms wreak havoc in St. Marys

Although the gypsy moth population did not turn out to be as much of a problem as predicted, another caterpillar has already begun to wreak havoc in Elk County.
During Monday night's Elk County Conservation District Board of Director's meeting, Toby Herzing of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources reported receiving numerous calls from farmers worried about a little green and brown worm that was ravaging their hay fields.

Ridgway Major League All-Stars host DuBois

The Ridgway baseball major league division all-stars hosted DuBois in its first District 10 Little League tournament game as DuBois won 20-2 in four innings over Ridgway at the Ridgway Little League fields along Grant Road.
DuBois left little doubt in the outcome after a 14-run first inning. Center fielder Kolby Ho and second baseman Mitchell Ferra walked to start the game. First baseman Daron Walker singled to load the bases and shortstop Peter Foradora walked to plate Ho for the game's first run.

ST. MARYS - A year-long investigation led by Troop C of the Pennsylvania State Police in conjunction with the United States Postal Service involving the sale and distribution of illegal narcotics in Elk, Jefferson, and Clearfield counties resulted in the June 20 arrests of seven Elk County residents and one individual with local ties.
