JOHNSONBURG – The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch and the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader track and field teams won their respective Elk County Track and Field championships Thursday at the 2011 Elk County Track and Field Meet held at the Johnsonburg complex.
The Dutch won the boys’ title with 81 points. Elk Catholic was second with 77 and Johnsonburg third with 28.
The Lady Crusaders won the girls’ meet with 93 points, followed by Johnsonburg with 53.50 and St. Marys with 41.50.
Ridgway baseball scored a victory on Senior Day with a 3-2 win over Curwensville Thursday afternoon.
Senior Ben Jaques had a 2-run single in the bottom of the sixth to snap a 1-all tie. Fellow senior Kevin Kilhoffer opened the inning by being hit by a pitch. Josh Mitchell then walked to put two on with none out. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch and scored as Jaques looped a single into right center field.
JOHNSONBURG – Poor fielding in the infield led to two game-changing innings en route to a 12-1 six-inning defeat Thursday against rival Elk County Catholic.
Johnsonburg allowed four runs in the fourth inning and five more in the sixth inning and could not make up the deficit.
Down only 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning, the Ramettes allowed nine batters to come to the plate.
Kay D. Salberg, age 83, of 2084 Ridgway Johnsonburg Rd., Ridgway, died early Thursday morning, May 12, 2011, at Elk Regional Health Center following a lengthy illness.
Andrew Patrick, 85, of 313 Clarion Rd., Johnsonburg, died on Wednesday evening, May 11, 2011 at his residence.
He was born on Feb. 2, 1926 in Wilcox, son of the late John and Mary Yankovich Patrick.
He married Marion A. Sprague on July 5, 1952 in Sheffield. She died on Oct. 10, 1990.
He resided in Johnsonburg most of his life and graduated from Johnsonburg High School. He was a member of Holy Rosary Church and Central Hose Co.
He was a Navy veteran, having served in World War II in the Pacific Theater as a Seaman 1st Class with the 10th Beach Battalion and aboard the USS Griggs.

Ridgway softball lost 12-2 in six innings to DuBois Central Catholic on a sunny Wednesday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Ridgway scored its runs in the home half of the fourth inning with the Lady Cardinals leading 7-0. Bri Stenta led off the inning with a triple to right center field, she scored on a subsequent single from Ashley Viglione for Ridgway’s first run. Sam Kovalyak also followed with a single. After two outs were made on a fielder’s choice and popout, Taylor Roseto singled to plate Viglione.
KANE – The Elk County Catholic track and field teams swept the Johnsonburg and Kane squads in a double dual meet held Tuesday at Kane.
Against Johnsonburg, the Lady Crusaders beat the Ramettes 89-44, while the Crusaders downed the Rams 117-22.
The Lady Crusaders beat the Lady Wolves 81-65, while the Crusaders beat the Wolves 80-69.
“We had another good meet today with some strong performances, especially in the throws and jumps,” said ECCHS coach John Schneider.
“Congratulations to David Bojalad, who set a new school record in the new javelin with a throw of 179’1”,” said Schneider.
JOHNSONBURG – Confident from a one-run loss earlier this season to Curwensville, the Ramettes were unable to replicate that effort in a 14-3 five-inning loss Wednesday at Knothole Recreational Park.
Johnsonburg previously succumbed in a 7-6 contest earlier this year to the Lady Tide but it was all Curwensville Wednesday afternoon under sunny skies in Paper City.
Ronald E. "Dingo" Bullers, 64, of 416 Mill St., Johnsonburg, died Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at Hamot Medical Center in Erie following a brief illness.
He was born on Nov. 7, 1946 in Ridgway, son of the late William L. and Hattie Schenk Bullers.
He resided in Johnsonburg all his life and graduated from Johnsonburg High School in 1964.
He belonged to the Central Hose Co., Kane Country Club, Johnsonburg Elks Club and Rolfe Sportsmen's Club. He was a former Knothole, Little League and American Legion baseball coach and was an avid golfer.

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Crusaders held on to defeat the Bradford Owls by an 8-6 score Tuesday afternoon at Berwind Park.
After five innings of play, ECC held an 8-1 lead. The Owls scored four in the sixth and one in the seventh making the final score 8-6.
“We held on to win that one,” said ECCHS coach Father Eric Vogt.
“Rick (Pearsall) came in to finish it but it was our timely hitting that won the game. Joe McLaughlin had a clutch two-run double in the fifth inning,” said the coach.
