PSP Fire Marshal determines arson cause of two St. Marys fires

ST. MARYS – The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal, St. Marys City Police Department and the Crystal Fire Department report investigating the origin and cause of a fire that occurred at 11:32 p.m. on Monday, July 9, 2012 at the residence of Michael Scolari, 333 N. St. Marys St., St. Marys. The fire destroyed a 1999 Coleman camping trailer parked in the driveway of the residence. The cause of the fire was determined to be arson and remains under investigation. Damage is estimated at $6,000. There were no injuries.

County begins process of replacing tax collection company

FOX TWP. - "It turned out to be a fiasco," said Charles Bloam III, tax collector for the City of St. Marys, in describing the realization of Pennsylvania's Act 32 requiring counties to consolidate the collection of earned income tax (EIT) to a single collector.
The recent breakdown of the county's contract with CENTAX, the firm contracted to collect and disburse earned income tax to local municipalities and school districts, has highlighted difficulties associated with the state's Act 32 legislation.

Adult Day Services invites residents to sweeten up their Friday the 13th

ST. MARYS - Adult Day Services, a Community Nurses-licensed facility, located at 625 Maurus St., will be holding a bake sale on Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. in an effort to encourage members of the community to come and check out the facility.
Signs will be posted near both the Maurus and Louis street entrances to the parking lot in an effort to direct visitors to the building. Adult Day Services staff will be parking at Elk County Catholic High School in order to free up parking spots, but individuals can also park at ECC and walk over as well.

Marjorie Elaine Rhines Zimmerman, 86, formerly of 67 Luray Drive, Ridgway, experienced her final homecoming on Saturday, July 7, 2012.
She was born in Hallton, June 6, 1926, the daughter of Jay R. Rhines and Mary Lapham Rhines Hutchins. She married Robert LaRue Zimmerman on Sept. 11, 1948, in Ridgway. He predeceased her March 25, 2005.
She enjoyed reading, especially her Bible, music and spending time with family and friends.

Chief updates council on fires

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg Fire Chief Bob Dickey updated the Johnsonburg Borough Council during their regular meeting Monday on two fires that recently have been a cause for alarm to many of the residents within the borough of Johnsonburg and surrounding areas.
The first fire Dickey touched on was at the Old Johnsonburg Hotel along East Center Street that was reported to have ignited at approximately 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 28.
According to Dickey, the fire began earlier in the night.

Fire destroys camper

The Crystal Department reports being called out at approximately 11:36 p.m. on Monday, July 9, 2012 for a camper on fire on the corner of Parade and N. St. Marys streets. Upon arrival, the camper was fully engulfed. Department personnel extinguished the fire. The camper was reported to be a total loss. There was also some damage to the exterior of the house and also to a vehicle that was parked next to the camper, as well as some smoke damage inside the house. Ridgway junior league all-stars host St. Marys

The St. Marys junior league all-stars advanced in the District 10 tournament with a 12-6 victory over Ridgway Tuesday night at the Ridgway Little League fields along Grant Road.
Nate DaCanal and Joe Nasoni both opened the game by being hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Ross Brennen doubled both runners home for the game's first two runs. Brennen would later cross the plate as Dalton Bauer grounded out to first.

Parana: Meth lab arrest a success

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg Borough Chief of Police Bryan Parana commented on the recent investigation of a clandestine laboratory and arrest during Monday afternoon's borough council meeting.
Justin Greene, 26, of 137 Terra Cotta Rd., was arrested for manufacturing methamphetamine and operating a methamphetamine laboratory. The arrest stems from an investigation on June 18 where police responded to the residence for unusual items found at that residence. According to reports, upon further investigation ruminates of a clandestine lab were discovered.

Tax committee wants out of 'disastrous' contract

FOX TOWNSHIP – A special meeting of the Elk County Tax Collection Committee was held Monday at the Fox Township Municipal Building in response to the failure of a tax collection firm contracted by the county to collect and distribute earned income tax (EIT) to its school districts and municipalities in accordance with Act 32 legislation.

Peterson tosses no-hitter for Wilcox in 8-0 win

WILCOX – From the beginning of Monday's game, Smethport was overmatched and Cole Peterson was spectacular.
Peterson threw a no-hitter against Smethport in an 8-0 win in a winner's bracket game of the Elk County American Legion baseball playoffs.
Smethport had just one baserunner for the game and it came with two outs in the seventh inning as Zach Smith drew a walk which prevented a perfect game.
