JOHNSONBURG â Students of the Johnsonburg Area School District have met PSSA [Pennsylvania School System of Assessment] standards for Adequate Yearly Progress [AYP] for the 2011-2012 school year.
Elementary school principal Jennifer Hobbs presented the students' scores during the August board of directors meeting.
In math, elementary students in grades 3 through 6 scored an 86.4 percent proficiency out of a targeted 78 percent.
JOHNSONBURG â A recent study conducted by U.S. News & World Report ranked the Johnsonburg Area School District as one of the top high schools in Pennsylvania.
According to high school principal Brock Benson, the organization ranks all of the high schools in the United States based on standardized testing and advanced placement [AP] scores.
"They look at your proficiency rates of all of your students and also how you do with students who are economically disadvantaged," Benson said.
Clifford L. Bundy, 63, of 3161 Montmorenci Road, Ridgway, passed away, Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012, at UPMC Hamot in Erie.
He was born Feb. 18, 1949, in Ridgway, the son of Clifford E. and Vivian Gearhart Bundy. He married Trudie Huckabone, she survives. Mr. Bundy was a lifelong Ridgway resident.
He was a member of St. Leoâs Catholic Church, and the Masons. He had been employed at St. Marys Tool and Die Co. He was honorably discharged from the Pennsylvania National Guard, after eight years.
Eugene Albert Abplanalp, age 78, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012.
He remained positive and kept his sense of humor until the end, true to his character. Gene was an inspiration to his family, friends, and colleagues.
The Elk County Commissioners on Tuesday approved a proposal for new software to help streamline services at the prothonotary's office.
Susanne Straub Schneider, the county's prothonotary, said Tuesday that the new software will be used for the civil side of the office.
"Currently we use infocon-- it's a DOS system and it's antiquated," Schneider said. "The new software would improve docketing for the deputies and it would also improve access to the public. Eventually, we would move to having it accessible online.
The Ridgway Area School District officially terminated its contract with the Central Tax Bureau of Pennsylvania (CENTAX) at its monthly school board meeting Tuesday night at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
The contract was originally dated for Feb. 29. The approved motion directs CENTAX to deliver all records, returns, uncashed checks and electronic records to H.A. Berkheimer by Aug. 31.
Catherine Franz, 413 Allenhurst Ave., Ridgway, died peacefully at home on Aug. 13, 2012. She was 83 years old.
The great joy in Cathyâs life was her children, and she was blessed to have four children near her side as she passed into heaven: Chip Franz of Raleigh, N.C., Mark âRustyâ Franz of Ridgway; Tammi Rossi, formerly of Ridgway and now residing in Kutztown, and Candi Gross of Sykesville.

The business was started by St. Marys resident Ryan Wehler in May and offers power washing services for surfaces such as driveways, sidewalks, interior garages, brick pavers, sandstone, retaining walls, polywood decks, and vinyl railing and fences.
