Lisa C. Serafini, age 39, passed away July 18, 2012 at her home with her family by her side. 
She is preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Benny and Mary Serafini; maternal grandparents Joseph and Mary Karpinski; and an uncle, Larry Serafini. 
She is survived by her parents, Benny and Barbara Serafini; a son, Kyle L. Serafini; a brother, Brian Serafini; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. 
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Hospice of Dayton. Arrangements in care of Newcomer Funeral Home – North.

Nancy L. Farr

Nancy L. Farr, 74, of 160 East Ave., Johnsonburg, died Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at the Lutheran Home in Kane following a lengthy illness.
She was born March 14, 1938 in Ludlow, daughter of the late Anthony (Tony) and Fannie Visco Raymondo. She married George J. Farr on March 2, 1957; he survives.
She resided in the community for 55 years. She graduated from Kane High School in 1956. She was a member of Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg, and loved homemaking and family life.

Back-to-back: Wilcox wins Elk County League title

WILCOX – Make it back-to-back Elk County American Legion baseball titles for Wilcox.
Wilcox won the Elk County American Legion Baseball League championship for a second straight year after an 8-1 victory over Fox Township Tuesday night at Jones Township Community Park in the championship game of the league playoffs.

Nine counties agree on new phone system

Elk County will soon be one of nine Pennsylvania counties with a new state-of-the-art 911 phone system.
Mike McAllister, the county's emergency management director, reiterated Tuesday during an Elk County Board of Commissioners meeting that the current system is outdated, having received an "end-of-life" letter approximately one year ago; parts and maintenance are now no longer available for the outdated system.
While individual counties are free to look at options for a 911 phone system, the costs can be exorbitant.

Longtime voters honored at gathering

Elk County government officials honored 15 new members of the state's Voter Hall of Fame Tuesday morning with a short program and brunch at the Courthouse Annex along Center Street.
"We just wanted to thank and recognize [them] for the voting record of 50 consecutive years," said Elk County Commissioner Daniel R. Freeburg. "[They] deserve it. We appreciate it when people take [voting] seriously."

Recycling center to get part-time help

Members of the county's salary board voted Tuesday to create a part-time position to assist in operations at the community recycling center and other collection programs operated through the Elk County Solid Waste Authority.
Officials on Tuesday gave the green light for a "Level 5" position with either a non-probationary rate of $11.07 an hour or a union probationary rate of $11.45 an hour; the rate is contingent upon further evaluation of the job, specifically responsibilities with various pieces of equipment at the center.

Ambulance service rescinds proposal

The Ridgway Township Supervisors held their regular meeting Tuesday night to discuss whether the St. Marys Ambulance Service or the Ridgway Ambulance Service would be designated as the primary service provider for north Ridgway Township.
Officials from the St. Marys and Ridgway Ambulance services, members of the Johnsonburg Fire Department and residents from Ridgway Township were on hand to seek information and take part in the discussion.

Elk County Humane Society turns finance issues over to police

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Humane Society is turning over the effort to retrieve its missing records and assets to the St. Marys City Police Department, the organization said in a press release issued Tuesday. The Humane Society's financial records and assets have been out of the organization's control since June 24.

Tickets on sale for Chamber Wing Fling

ST. MARYS – Tickets may now be reserved for the 2012 St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce Wing Fling taking place Friday, Aug. 17 in downtown St. Marys.
Now in its 11th year, the Wing Fling has become a popular event attracting upwards of 500 attendees. Crowds gather in the Market Street area from 6-9:30 p.m., where they sample some of the area's tastiest wings and enjoy entertainment by a local band.
"The 2012 St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce Wing Fling looks to be the social event of the year for the local area," said Greg Stauffer, Wing Fling committee chairman.

Water line replacement project moves forward

Following a recommendation from the Water, Sewer, Refuse and Streets Committee, the Borough of Ridgway will move forward with a water line replacement project at the Laurel Mill Reservoir.
According to the committee's report, the upgrade will include replacing two 12-inch water mains from the reservoir to the Clarion River.
Environmental Manager Paul McCurdy discussed using one 18-inch line as an alternative to replacing the two lines to save money but said in the event of an emergency, the Borough of Ridgway could wind up without water if something happened to that main line.
