Charles William 'Bill' Reed

September 3, 2012

Charles William 'Bill' Reed, 95, died Aug. 31, 2012 at the Rouse Home of Warren County where he had resided the past nine months.
He was born in Ridgway on July 24, 1917 to the late Ruth Dickey and Rollin Amos Reed.
On June 12, 1948, he married Ruth Anna Eckert who preceded him in death on Aug. 16, 2006.

Crusaders open season with 33-6 win over Smethport

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Crusader football squad opened their season with a 33-6 victory over the Smethport Hubbers at Dutch Country Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
ECC jumped out to an early 12-0 lead with a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter. Smethport scored their only points in the second quarter while the Crusaders added another touchdown, making the score at halftime 18-6. Elk Catholic finished with another pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter for the 33-6 win.

Elkers win season opener over Otto-Eldred

DUKE CENTER – Friday night was anything but a defensive struggle between Ridgway and Otto-Eldred.
For the Elkers, it turned out to be nothing but a victory over the Terror.
Ridgway was able to withstand a second-half surge from Otto-Eldred to take a 41-32 victory at Otto-Eldred High School in the season opener for both teams.

'Blue' moon shines bright in Elk County

Last night's lunar view was known as a "blue moon."
If you saw the moon last night, it looked big and beautiful, but not necessarily blue. Although certain atmospheric conditions can cause a moon to appear blue, it is rare. According to a popular definition, a blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month.
The first full moon last month occurred on Aug. 1.

Bodamer starts with a bang, drops Johnsonburg

JOHNSONBURG – Port Allegany senior starting quarterback Matt Bodamer showed Friday night that he hasn't lost a step since last season as he threw for five touchdowns and ran for three more in a dominating 54-0 victory over host Johnsonburg.
Bodamer completed 17 passes on the night for 342 yards, including seven tosses to Tyce Miller, a senior standout wide receiver who finished with 190 yards through the air and three scores. Bodamer had 312 passing yards at halftime against the Rams' 18 yards of total offense at the break.

Milliard arraigned on new charges

New charges, including multiple drug offenses and illegal possession of firearms, have been filed against Francis Anthony Milliard, 54, of Ridgway, currently incarcerated on arson and related charges in connection with two residential fires in Elk County, as well as charges of attempted murder and assault stemming from Milliard's alleged beating of a Ridgway man.

Benefit concert for F.I.R.S.T. foundation scheduled for Saturday

WILCOX – Bailey Pretak and friends will present “Release the Butterfly”, a concert to benefit the Foundation for Ichthyosis and Related Skin Types on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Johnsonburg Area High School Auditorium. 
The concert is free of charge, but a free-will offering will be taken and all proceeds go to the F.I.R.S.T. foundation to fund research and publicity.  This weekend’s concert will feature inspirational music by dancers and singers who will tell a story of those who have Ichthyosis.

David L. “Keppy” Kephart

David L. “Keppy” Kephart, 68, of 139 Lynch Rd., St. Marys, died Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at the DuBois Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
He was born October 7, 1943 in Clearfield, son of the late Robert D. and Mary Vena Landsberry Kephart.
On September 23, 1995 in St. Marys, he married Patricia A. Breindel, who survives.

Polaski returns for Johnsonburg cross country

Kathryn Polaski will return to the Johnsonburg cross country team this season as its lone member at season’s start.
Johnsonburg coach Eric Lowry is happy to be able to see Polaski run with Johnsonburg cross country.
“Just to be able to see her finish her career out will be good enough,” Lowry said. “She’s doing fine, I’m just hoping to give her a chance to qualify and go to states these next two years, that’s really the big thing.”
Lowry said Polaski has a chance to be a state qualifier this season if she can have a strong season.

Ridgway football full of new faces for new season

After a 6-4 season in 2011, Ridgway football comes into the new season hopeful after losing 15 seniors to graduation last year.
To offset the loss of 15 seniors, Ridgway has 16 sophomores coming up to the team this year.
“It’s a great group of kids and we lost a lot last year with our 15 seniors that we graduated,” Ridgway coach Mark Heindl said. “We definitely have a great group of sophomores coming up through the system. The future looks bright for the football program.”
