Schlimm takes medalist honors at Bradford

Ridgway's T.J. Schlimm took medalist honors at the 18-hole Bradford Invitational held Saturday afternoon at Penn Hills Country Club.
Schlimm shot a 74, including a 35 on the front nine.
"It was a great tournament for us in preparation of next Monday's District 9 Tournament," Ridgway coach Dave Zawatski said. "None of the kids had ever played the course, and they did a nice job under windy conditions. What a performance for T.J. Schlimm to fire a 74 and win medalist honors in such a talented field."

Updates provided on East Branch safety initiative

As part of the long-term East Branch Dam Safety Initiative project, lake personnel continue to work closely with staff from the Pittsburgh District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in overseeing the construction of a new cutoff wall inside the dam.
The $280 million project is in response to a safety issue related to potential internal erosion discovered in 2008, similar to a seepage issue encountered in 1957 which required the lowering of the lake for repairs. The multifaceted project has a completion date of 2017.

St. Marys man drawn for cow elk license

HARRISBURG – Sylvester Kronenwetter of St. Marys was the lone Elk County resident selected for an elk license in Friday morning’s drawing held at the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) headquarters in Harrisburg and broadcast live on the PGC’s website. Kronenwetter’s name was drawn for the 41st of 46 cow elk licenses awarded for this year’s hunt, which is scheduled to take place from Nov. 5-10 with an extended elk hunting period outside the elk management area for those with unfilled elk licenses from Nov. 12-17.

RASD preps public for November election

As the November general election approaches the Ridgway Area School District has updated their website to further assist voters who are still uncertain whether to vote in favor of increasing their earned income tax in order to eliminate the occupation tax.
At a special meeting held Aug. 7 the board voted to place the following Act 130 referendum on the November 6 election ballot:

Late defensive stops seal upset win for Johnsonburg

COUDERSPORT – Whoever says Johnsonburg's varsity football program is dead may be very wrong indeed.
The Rams (1-2) used a series of defensive stops in the fourth quarter Friday night to knock off Coudersport (1-2) in a 22-14 upset in a steady rainfall, the program's first victory since a 41-0 win at home on Oct. 8, 2010 against Ridgway, the last win of former head coach Tom Launer before his untimely death six months later.

Mavis B. Schott, 95, of West Long Avenue, DuBois, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2012 at the DuBois Nursing Home.
Born on Nov. 16, 1916 in Birmingham, Ala., she was the daughter of the late Commodore and Mamie (Smithers) Byrd.
She was married to Alvin Schott. He preceded her in death on Feb. 17, 1958.
During World War II, she worked at Sylvania in Emporium. She had also worked as a clerk at various stores in Johnsonburg.

Bodamer sets D-9 record in Gators win over Elkers

Port Allegany's run through the AML South continues as the Gators won 55-14 over Ridgway Friday night at Memorial Field.
"They are a good football team," Ridgway coach Mark Heindl said. "You cannot take anything away from our kids, they did not quit. They left everything out on the field. Port Allegany came in, they got that big lead in the first quarter, 21-0 but our kids did not fold their tents. Our goal in the second half was to win that, we came out and won the second half. We'll take that momentum into next week."
