Firefighters respond to call at annex

Members of the Ridgway Volunteer Fire Department responded Tuesday afternoon to what initially started out as an odor investigation at the Elk County Courthouse Annex in the 300 block of Center Street.
According to Ridgway fire chief John Wygant, an initial investigation yielded no results and he terminated the investigation. Elk Company 4 was reportedly called out at 2:58 p.m., according to 911 dispatch.
"Five minutes after I left, I was called back as the smell got more intense," Wygant said. "It was then that I called for the general alarm."

No tax increase at county level

Elk County commissioners presented a tentative 2013 budget Tuesday morning without a tax increase during their board meeting.
According to commissioner Daniel R. Freeburg, 2012 has followed a continued trend of challenges for small local governments.
"With rising costs in healthcare, gas and everyday expenses, the county is continually striving to cut spending where possible," Freeburg said. "Adding on to this burden is the continual reduction in state funding for mandated programs."

Proposed injection well still topic of interest

The Elk County Board of Commissioners took another step in opposing the construction of an "injection well" by Seneca Resources along Lamont Road between state Route 66 and Highland Road near James City in Highland Township.
On Tuesday morning, the commissioners voted 3-0 to adopt a resolution opposing the possible injection well.

Natural gas company holding open house

WEEDVILLE – A Pennsylvania-based natural gas company will be hosting an open house this week for Elk County residents who want to know more about Marcellus Shale drilling operations in the area.
EQT Corporation will host the free event from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6 at the Bennetts Valley Senior Center, 149 Plum St. in Weedville.

Salvation Army needs bell ringers

The Salvation Army is in need of volunteers for their annual Red Kettle Campaign.
To help fulfill the needs of the community, Lt. Esther Wilson of the Salvation Army in Ridgway has increased this year's goal from $32,000 to $42,000.

County jury commissioner positions abolished

Following suit after other counties across the state, including McKean County to the north, the Elk County Board of Commissioners acted Tuesday to abolish the positions of jury commissioner.
The exclusion of the two positions will reportedly save the county $12,000.

Mark C. Hill

December 4, 2012

Mark C. Hill, 52, of St. Marys, died Sunday night, December 2, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born May 14, 1958 in Ridgway, son of the late John F. Hill and Janis (Snyder) Hill.
He married Tina Gagliardi, who survives.
He resided in the area most of his life and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Second man in camp burglary duo pleads guilty

The second man in a duo charged with a string of camp break-ins that spanned one year and three counties entered a plea of guilty to 111 counts of burglary in Elk County Court Monday.

Connelly reelected as RASD board president

The Ridgway Area School District Board of Directors held a reorganizational meeting to appoint officers prior to their regular meeting Monday night.
Lisa Connelly was unanimously reelected as board president.
Board member William Seely nominated Dave Parsons as president but was declined by Parsons.
Gloria Almquist-Shull was reappointed as vice president.
