ST. MARYS – Robert "Bert" Sorg has announced that he will mount a write-in campaign for Magisterial District Justice 59-3-03 for the Nov. 8 General Election.
"We're going to mount a good campaign. We're going to try it," Sorg said.
ST. MARYS – A trial date for Lawrence Earl Donachy, 36, of St. Marys, accused of the 1999 homicide of St. Marys beautician Irene Challingsworth, has been set for Monday, Oct. 10 beginning at 9 a.m. in the Elk County Courthouse in Ridgway.
The trial is expected to continue for 10 business days until Friday, Oct. 21.
Jury selection will take place in Butler County on Friday, Sept. 16, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Betty E. Frank, 76, of 675 Montmorenci Ave., Ridgway, and formerly of 231 Spruce St., died peacefully Monday morning, Sept. 5, 2011, at Mountain Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Clearfield.
She was born July 18, 1935, in Ridgway, daughter of the late James A. and Twelda E. (Gulnac) Richards. She was married to Edmund J. Frank, who preceded her in death in 2001.

WILCOX – The annual Wilcox cemetery walk was held Sunday as a part of the Wilcox Public Library’s festival. The walk was led by Tom Wantuck, a member of the Jones Township Historical Interest Group. Wantuck led participants through the cemetery touching on some of Wilcox’s founding families. Wantuck mentioned as he relished in the beauty of the Wilcox cemetery how that cemetery is one of four in Jones Township.
PORT ALLEGANY – Scorching was a good way to describe the temperatures Saturday afternoon at Port Allegany High School.
It was also a good way to describe the offense for both Ridgway and Port Allegany football.
Both teams had over 380 yards of total offense as Port Allegany held on for a 46-35 victory over Ridgway.
Port Allegany quarterback Matt Bodamer threw for 311 yards and five touchdowns for the Gators; four of his touchdowns went to Charlie Buchanan.
ST. MARYS – For the second year in a row, the Elk County Catholic Crusaders football team started off their season with a victory over the Cameron County Red Raiders, this time picking up a 19-6 victory. Both teams had plenty of extra time to consider their strategies during Saturday evening’s match-up at Dutch Country Stadium in St. Marys, as the game was delayed for an hour and 15 minutes during the second quarter due to visible lightning from a storm to the north of the county.

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Conservation District is hard at work getting the West Creek Wetland Learning Center ready for its grand opening.
The grand opening is set for Wednesday, Sept. 28, which is also Elk County Conservation District Day.
"The majority of the landscaping of the rain and flower garden is complete for the year, except for minor details that will be completed before the grand opening," said watershed specialist Kim Bonfardine.
FOX TWP. – The words 'fiscal restraint' were repeated often by U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) at a town hall meeting held at the Red Fern in Fox Township Friday afternoon.
Toomey, on a tour through Elk and several neighboring counties, held the town hall meeting to address the federal debt, jobs and the economy.
There was a multi-vehicle accident Friday at approximately 4:50 p.m. across from The Royal Inn on Boot Jack Road. The crash left one vehicle on its side.
JOHNSONBURG – Visiting Coudersport set the tone early with a punishing rushing attack Friday that the Rams had no answer for as the Falcons cruised to a 48-13 win on junior running back Caden Whitman's four rushing touchdowns.
"We were manhandled-- our defensive line, both sides of the ball-- we were just manhandled," said Johnsonburg head varsity football coach Jesse Schreiber. "Coudersport had a very aggressive offensive line and they manhandled our defense. We were in a 5-2 and then went to a 4-4 defensive scheme in the second quarter, and that helped us a little bit defensively.
