Alfred (Al) Caldwell Sr.

Alfred (Al) Caldwell Sr., of 10618 Timberlin Rd., Chesterfield, Va., passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Aug. 17, 2012.
Born on June 3, 1936, in Johnsonburg, he was the son of the late Hudnell and Lula (DeLong) Caldwell. He was married to Gail K. Caldwell, who survives.
Al graduated from Johnsonburg High School in 1954. He then enlisted in the United States Army and served for three years. After leaving the service, he was employed at the Ubel Furniture Store in Johnsonburg and later at Grimone’s Furniture Store in Emporium.

Lady Elkers dominate Sheffield

After a sluggish start, Ridgway volleyball dispatched of Sheffield easily in the final two sets to complete a 3-0 (25-21, 25-9, 25-12) victory over the Lady Wolverines Tuesday night at Ridgway Area High School.
The two teams were tied at 9-all in the first before Ridgway was able to create some distance with a 5-0 run. Sierra Kos had all five service points during this flurry while Katie Oknefski and Maria Buhler had kills.
“Maria Buhler did a good job,” Ridgway coach Janet Redmond said. “She’s one you can depend on.”

Feronti shoots low round for Ridgway

Ridgway girls golf hosted an area match Tuesday afternoon at Laurel Mill Golf Course.
Ridgway was led by senior Logan Feronti as she shot a 59. Sam Carobine finished with a 73 and Shania Reitz carded a 74. Sarah Szczotka finished with a 78 as Ridgway finished with a team total of 285.
“Logan Feronti played her best round of the year with a 59 on her last home match as our only senior,” Ridgway coach Gary Gerber II said. “She has continued to improve and work hard the entire season.  She will also compete at districts on Monday along with Sam Carobine.”

Johnsonburg loses close tennis match to St. Marys

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Ramettes lost a close 5-4 decision Tuesday afternoon on the tennis courts against visiting St. Marys.
The Ramettes went down 3-2 in singles competition and couldn't make up the deficit in doubles action.
"Even though we lost I still think we're the better team," said Johnsonburg head varsity girls tennis coach Gregg Dauber. "We didn't make matchups in doubles, we played our best from top to bottom, and I thought those were the rules in District 9 tennis.

Ridgway boys soccer loses 3-1 to Gators

Ridgway boys soccer lost 3-1 to Port Allegany Tuesday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
The Elkers played well with the Gators during the first 30-plus minutes, keeping the game scoreless while generating some chances of their own. Ridgway striker Peter Pontzer had a pair of chances in the first half including a blazing run through the middle of the field which led to a shot that went just over the top of the goal. Bryce Dias also had a good chance with 9:15 left but the shot was saved.

Babysitter sentenced in child sexual assault case

September 25, 2012

A babysitter convicted of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl in his care was sentenced in Elk County Court Monday to no less than 10 years and no more than 20 years in a state penitentiary.
Corey Allen Heatherdale, 26, of Ridgway, was convicted by a jury in a one-day trial on July 20, 2012, in the Elk County Courthouse.

Elkland Search and Rescue initiative saves time

ST. MARYS – A rise in the occurrence of cognitive disorders like Alzheimer's disease, dementia and autism has sparked the Elkland Search and Rescue [ESR] team to kick off an initiative designed to better locate individuals who have a tendency to wander.
ESR is taking a proactive stance by asking family members of those affected to also be proactive by filling out a form, "Wanderers Information Sheet," before an incident occurs to act as a tool to help locate the person.

SWA takes annual landfill tour

FOX TWP. – The Elk County Solid Waste Authority embarked on its annual tour of Veolia Greentree Landfill in Fox Twp. on Tuesday. Landfill manager Don Henrichs led the tour and gave the group a rundown of current operations and recent changes to the facility.
The landfill currently takes in about 1 million tons a year; it takes approximately 2.5 years to fill a cell, or an area in which waste is deposited and is later filled in. Cells range from six to 10 acres and the current cell being filled is approximately nine acres. About nine acres were capped this year.

Dorethea M. Moore

September 25, 2012

Dorethea M. Moore, age 87, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2012 at DuBois Regional Medical Center.
She had been a resident at Highland View Health Care in Brockway.
She was born June 25, 1925 in Brandy Camp to Sam and Cora Shaffer Bennett.
She married Foster L. Moore who preceded her in death on June 4, 1996.
She was a member of the Lighthouse Community Church in Brockway.
Dorethea was a homemaker who enjoyed canning vegetables and taking care of her home.

Helen M. Detwiler

September 25, 2012

Helen M. Detwiler, 97, formerly of Johnsonburg and Kane, died Monday evening, Sept. 24, 2012 at Sena Kean Manor in Smethport.
Born July 8, 1915 in Johnsonburg, she was the daughter of John and Bessie Detwiler. 
She attended college at Penn State and in Indiana, Pa., and was employed as a teacher and counselor for many years for the Johnsonburg School District, retiring in 1976.
