Fox Township advances to play Wilcox

The Fox Township Amerian Legion Post 511 baseball team earned a trip to the Elk County League championship game with a hard-fought 8-6 victory over St. Marys on Saturday night at Berwind Park.

Carnival starts Monday

Members of the Ridgway Fire Department and other volunteers are gearing up for the 79th Ridgway Firemen's Carnival scheduled for Monday, July 16 through Saturday, July 21.
The event will be open from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and 6 p.m. until midnight from Thursday to Saturday.
Tuesday night will feature the kiddie pet parade; lineup will begin at 5 p.m. on the lower end of Center Street and the parade will start at 6 p.m.

Dept. of State investigating local doctor in drug death

The investigation into a local doctor in response to the death of a patient due to complications caused by medications prescribed her is being led by the Pa. Department of State following her father's continued appeals to state officials for an investigation.
Jim Buehler of Ridgway has spent the last four years pursuing legal action in the July 7, 2008 death of his daughter, Heather Buehler Armanini, whom he claims was prescribed excessive amounts of powerful, habit-forming drugs by a local doctor, including a mixture of oxycodone and acetaminophen.

‘Mike Proudfit Night,’ 5/K Walk/Run to be held Aug. 5, 6

ST. MARYS – When you talk to people about Michael B. Proudfit, one thing becomes apparent quickly: The young man touched many lives during his brief 19 years. Now, his many friends and family members plan to show their joy at having known him with a special night and a 5K walk/run in his memory.

DEP inspects construction permit

Works Superintendent Carl Gosnell reported on an inspection conducted by the Department of Environmental Protection [DEP] during Thursday night's Ridgway Township Municipal Authority meeting.
According to Gosnell, the inspection was conducted for a construction permit that was issued for the Boot Jack Pump Station.
"Basically, although the improvements are not completed and won't be completed until the end of September," Gosnell said, "it is the department's [DEP] opinion that we should be conducting the testing as outlined in the draft conditions.

Band bringing back old-fashioned concerts

ST. MARYS – The days of old-fashioned concerts in the park are being revived, as the Elk-Cameron Community Band plans to host two events in local parks in July.
Area residents are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and enjoy an array of musical numbers, lemonade and cookies.

Boys' soccer co-op a no-go in Johnsonburg

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg school district board members denied a cooperative contract for boys' varsity soccer during last night’s regular board meeting due to the vote not being in favor of the program. Regarding other sports, Shane Launer expressed his concern about transportation costs.
“Transportation (cost) seems to be escalating in other sports,” Launer said. “We are spreading ourselves too thin and need to utilize the students in the sports we have.”

Wlicox Legion advances to championship round

WILCOX – The Wilcox American Legion baseball team advanced to the championship round of the Elk County American Legion Baseball Tournament with a 10-0, 6-inning victory over St. Marys Thursday night at Jones Township Community Park.
Wilcox used a trio of 3-run innings along with a run in the fourth to take care of St. Marys.

Water supply meeting angers residents

Concerned residents of Daguscahonda, Elk County officials, state Representative Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) and members of the Elk County Tea Party crowded the Ridgway Township Municipal Building Wednesday night for a public meeting hosted by the Department of Environmental Protection [DEP] to discuss instituting a public water supply in Daguscahonda.
The meeting was held to discuss the Daguscahonda public water system in Ridgway Township and the steps necessary to comply with the Pennsylvania Safe Drinking Water Act and its regulations.

4 Kane residents are arrested for selling drugs

KANE – Four Kane residents have been arrested on felony charges for allegedly selling drugs.
According to a press release issued Wednesday by McKean County District Attorney Ray Learn, those arrested include:
*Travis A. Whipple, 27, of 16 Field St., Kane.
He is charged with two felony counts of drug delivery and two misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance.
On Jan. 23, Whipple allegedly sold heroin to a confidential informant.
On Feb. 15, Whipple allegedly sold morphine pills to a confidential informant.
*Virginia Mae Milner, 45, of 312 1/2 Welsh St., Kane.
