Phyllis J. Smith

Phyllis J. Smith, 85, of Elk Towers and formerly of Main Street, Kersey, died on Friday, Sept.. 27, 2013 at Pinecrest Manor following a lengthy illness.
She was born July 22, 1928 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Philip and Clara Kraus McKay.
On Nov. 7, 1953 in Harrisburg, she married the late Isaac L. Smith, who preceded her in death on Nov. 28, 1985.

Madeline M. "Madge" Antonuccio

Madeline M. "Madge" Antonuccio, 51, of 149 Water Works Rd., Ridgway, died on Friday, Sept. 27, 2013 at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born Aug. 16, 1962 in Ridgway, the daughter of Nicholas P. Antonuccio and the late Edna Dilley Antonuccio.
She spent the beginning of her love life with Jim Cristini, who fathered her two elder children and her later love life with Timothy Hasselman, who fathered her remaining four children.

Flavors of Fall event held

The Ridgway Chamber of Commerce hosted their annual Flavors of Fall festival in downtown Ridgway on Saturday afternoon. Area residents shopped at the many booths offering crafts and homemade foods including tie-dyed items from Sammy's Stash.

Trio advance to regionals from District 9 boys golf championship

BRADFORD – A trio of area golfers have qualified for the PIAA Western Regional Golf Championships after the conclusion of the District 9 boys golf individual championships Saturday at The Pennhills Club in Bradford.
Elliott Struble of Elk County Catholic finished second for the second straight year as he finished with a two-day total of 154 (76-78). Cameron Grumley of Johnsonburg tied for third with a total score of 156 (79-77).
TJ Schlimm of Ridgway finished tied for sixth with a score of 159 (78-81).

Elkers defeat Brockway for first time since 1999

BROCKWAY – For Ridgway football, it was a win more than a decade in the making.
Ridgway won 40-20 over Brockway Friday night at Frank Varischetti Field for the Elkers' first win over the Rovers since 1999.

Stephanic hearing continued for change of attorneys

ST. MARYS – District Judge Mark Jacob granted a continuance during the preliminary hearing of Michael J. Stephanic Jr., 44, of St. Marys, who is currently incarcerated in the Elk County Prison on charges he allegedly shot and killed June Andrus during a Sept. 3 incident in the parking lot of Eastern Sintered Metals.

New details released on Brockway shooting

BROCKWAY – This incident occurred as members of the Pennsylvania State Police and the Jefferson County Drug Task Force were serving a search warrant on the occupants of the Kenneth Lees Sr. residence, located at 1881 Cemetery Hill Rd., near the Borough of Brockway, Snyder Township, Jefferson County.

PSP trooper shot in Brockway

BROCKWAY – A Pa. State Police trooper was shot in the neck Thursday afternoon while serving a warrant at a Cemetery Hill Road residence in Brockway, according to police who called it an "active shooter" situation.
PSP reported that at approximately 2:30 p.m., two troopers were serving a warrant to man at 1881 Cemetery Hill Rd. in Brockway when shots rang out.
One trooper was hit in the neck and the other reportedly pulled him to safety. The injured law enforcement was flown from the scene to UPMC Altoona at 3:15 p.m.; he was reportedly in stable condition and conscious.

Ridgway volleyball edges Curwensville in five sets

It might have been the long way to victory but in the end, it was a Lady Elker volleyball victory.
After falling behind 2-1, Ridgway won the final two sets to take a 3-2 victory (25-16, 21-25, 23-25, 25-19, 16-14) over Curwensville Thursday night at Ridgway Area High School.
